Keyboard backlight on Thinkpad

I have a problem closely related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/dell-sputnik/+bug/1510344. Since moving from kernel 4.4.44 to 4.9.6 the keyboard backlight gets turned on when I log into the desktop (mate, lightdm). /sys/devices/platform/thinkpad_acpi/leds/tpacpi\:\:kbd_backlight/brightness is set to 2 and setting it to 0 turns the backlight off.

The workaround described here, https://bugs.launchpad.net/dell-sputnik/+bug/1510344/comments/98 as step 1 works for me.
