Hi all
I was working on copying my gentoo installation from a HDD to a SDD...
I am booted into the gentoo live cd (minimal)
I mkfs.ext4 on sda1 and I should of mkfs ext4 on sdb2
is there anyway to recover sda1 and sda4 or am I starting from scratch?

sda4 should be intact after an mkfs on sda1. Is it not?

Sorry I guess I could of been clearer on what I was saying but I am in panic mode right now... I
mkfs.ext4 on sda2 as well as sda4 sda2 before I realized I was using the wrong partitions
SDA2 is my /boot partition so I could probably get that back by reinstalling the kernel .. but my /root partition was on sda4 I just finished building this machine so I don't have a backup of my .config or anyhting yet but the system does say Superblock backups stored on blocks.. with a bunch of numbers... Im real new to linux and its taken me approx 1 month to setup this laptop with gentoo.. to start over is not going to be fun or easy |

Hi Cowboy!
If you have enough Disk Space you could make an image from that partition. And use Kali Linux Youtube -Video to recover your files. You have a chance that your User Files are there.
But to be honest. If your Laptop did not compile slow over days, its not worth. The most information of a fresh gentoo installation, was and is that you learning some stuff. The next time you set up it again it will go faster, maybe two or three days.
Pick yourself an USB-Stick as Backoup with your SSH-Keys, Config-Files or and your favorite Live-Linux as backup.
Good Luck! |

I've tried recovering filesystems (and files) on recent Linux versions, and it's
been a waste of time. With earlier filesystems (think 1990) it was just about
possible, but these days it's really easier to rebuild. (Which means you _must_
have valid backups.)

cowboy0629,
All your data is still there but the data the filesystem needs (metadata) to find it is gone.
There is no easy way to reconstruct the the metadata.
You can unpick things by hand, very slowly and you may recover a file or two.
For a fresh install, its not worth the effort.
If you have some valuable user data, testdisk, photorec and tools like that may find something.
Recovery in place is not possible. _________________ Regards,

Thank-you everyone... I tried test drive etc.. but my linux partition seemed to be gone.. but on the bright side (not) if I wanted I could of recovered the NTSF windows system that was originally on the drive from 2 years ago.... Anyhow.. I decided to take all your advice even though i spent 3 weeks on that install and ruined it all in 1 ms (I learned my lesson make sure to double read the are you sure you want to format the /dev/sda1) I bit the bullet and rebuilt the install and backed up all my main config files like .config and make.conf etc...I just finished the install yesterday and now doing my tweeking although I am having a few issues I didnt have before in my dmesg.. I am slowly getting them concord...
Thank-You all for your quick responses and ideas but this is all the fun of linux live and learn.. |
