As promised, here's my post for this issue that's driving me up the wall.
I've got drivers loaded for my 802.11b WiFi card (built into a Toshiba A25 S207), and the wireless extensions set up, AND the device is getting it's proper IP address and whatnot from the base station via DHCP, but I can't ping the base station, and therefore anything else.
Routing table looks like this:
192.168.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 wlan0
127.0.0.0 127.0.0.1 255.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 lo
0.0.0.0 192.168.0.1 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 wlan0
It's a Prism card. I've tried both the orinoco and hostap drivers. Nothing. The other strange thing is that only once in about every 10 attempts will arp actually produce the hardware address of the base station. Most of the time, it's "incomplete".
I will generously send smileys to anyone who can lend any help.
Thanks,

SOLVED!
It turns out that my base station had "Short Preamble" enables, and my card will not work with this. Thanks to everyone who offered help over my various posts.
