PostPosted: Thu Jan 12, 2017 8:33 am    Post subject: Xorg sometimes does not respond [SOLVED] Reply with quote

Hello, All !

I have updated both kernel and Xorg as described in wiki. I have /etc/portage/make.conf
Code:

USE="alsa -gtk -gnome -arts esd qt kde firefox opengl samba dvdr ffmpeg icq jabber aim yahoo -hal gnome-keyring udev -systemd"
...
VIDEO_CARDS="i810 radeon r128 nv intel nouveau nvidia"

If I try to remove nvidia card from video card list and unmerge nvidia-drivers then Xorg runs, but does not respond on both keyboard events and mouse move, but file /var/log/Xorg.0.log does not contain any errors, if nvidia drivers are emerged then all works properly, but this situation arises randomly. Xorg works on nouveau driver, because Xorg.0.log contains only its.
my Xorg.0.log is
Code:

In my case, I use only nvidia drivers. I haven't activated nouveau from kernel, and i haven't "nouveau" in VIDEO_CARDS (make.conf).
Then xorg.conf was created by running "nvidia-xconfig".

I think that you must choose nouveau or nvidia drivers.

In my opinion I choose nouveau drivers. Do I have to remove nvidia from video_cards and reemerge all packages that depends on this ? And after that do as described here or here ?

And one's more question.

In this we use systemd.setenv=GPUMOD=nouveau, but what I have to do if I use udev instead of systemd ?

VIDEO_CARDS="i810 radeon r128 nv intel nouveau nvidia"

Maybe it was already mentioned or asked in this topic.

Which gpu do you have? CAreful when its an optimus based notebook for example.

When you know your gpu than you should choose the appropriate VIDEO_CARDS and than follow the gentoo wiki / handbook for your gpu

My preliminary solution was
1. remove or blacklist all nvidia kernel modules
2. VIDEO_CARDS="nouveau" only
3. recompilation xorg-drivers xorg-server xf86-input-keyboard xf86-video-nouveau xf86-input-mouse.

Don't use these input drivers unless you have a specific need, mainly if you aren't using Linux.
xf86-input-evdev has been the driver to use for keyboard and mouse since years. And now it's actually xf86-input-libinput that we are moving over to for keyboard, mouse, touchpad, wacom tablets and more.

You mean that I should use xf86-input-evdev or xf86-input-libinput without xf86-input-keyboard and xf86-input-mouse ?

Correct.
xf86-input-libinput will also take over the job of xf86-input-synaptics and probably do better soon (there's a big touchpad acceleration rework that landed in release candidate of new dev-libs/libinput that we should get soon too, but it wasn't all that bad either before for most touchpads).
If you use GNOME 3.22 or newer, it also assumes xf86-input-libinput for X11 sessions, or you can't configure things in the mouse settings panel.

Leio ... they don't work anymore anyhow ... since you, and your team of "we know what's best for linux" decided that doing it without systemd-udev was a no-no, and bad for business.

Yeah, "we" ... you mean those who control the direction linux is taking.

best ... khay

No idea what doesn't work. Udev is at least a soft requirement at least indeed via hwids[udev], at least to get the mouse DPI and wheel angles database and have a consistent mouse and mousewheel scroll speed. These things work fine with any virtual/udev provider, except eudev might not have all the database entries parsing working (have not checked, might work just fine).
xf86-input-{mouse,keyboard} have been de facto deprecated on Linux before systemd was really used anywhere, afaik. Please keep your trolling to a minimum, especially when it goes offtopic (wrt systemd-udev).

Leio ... xf86-input-{mouse,keyboard}, which previously didn't require udev (of whatever flavor) to function, nolonger work.

You'll have to explain to me how udev (a device-manager) can effectively do anything with regard to "mouse and mousewheel scroll speed", that sounds like an imaginative coupling: "because hwids are *intergrated* anything else that might possibly function isn't going to do it right ... so we make udev the one true input handling thingy". As always "these things work fine" as long as you're following the program (coupled with lots of handwaving with regard to breaking the user experience).

You're using an appeal to "newness", or "legacy", to suggest that it doesn't, or can't, work for that reason, but that isn't the case. They got broken because freedesktop.org does whatever it can to keep its masters revenue stream as tightly controlled as possible.

Too funny ... these are the go-to terms for redhat shills these days, I don't think a month goes by without someone leveraging some hater on me, so much so I'm starting to think of it as a badge of honour. So, please keep your shilly-willy to a minimum, especially when your off-topic ... udev has everything to do with xf86-input-{mouse,keyboard} being broken for non-udev systems.

best ... khay

I don't really care if you don't like udev or not. The OP definitely does not mind, as seen by global USE=udev. Now please go discuss your udev hatred in a thread dedicated to it. I believe there is one with a couple dozen pages of posts for that.
Meanwhile I prefer stuff to just work. I exercise the power of Gentoo choice. I chooce to not care and have shit work anyways, without reconfiguring my mouse speed each time I happen to switch the mouse (or scratch my head if I had the audacity to attach two difference mice at once), and have it start working automatically, without hoping I have root access on the machine to set up some device nodes (which are done by devtmpfs anyways, not udev).
I told about using evdev or libinput instead, because udev is already used here, quite on purpose.

That said, he already was using evdev for at least some things, based on logs. So the keyboaurda nd mouse input drivers were just more or less redundant and unused.
