I have a fresh install Gentoo vm on KVM. If I boot to cli, use startx to enter Xfce, every step reacts instantly. However, when I use SLiM to auto-login Xfce, it takes a long time.

dmesg shows that the problem line is
Code:
random: nonblocking pool is initialized

it looks innocent in my google, but then I notice something strange:
When I boot the vm as usual, it takes 40 seconds. But,
if I am moving the mouse inside that vm window during boot, it takes less than 10 seconds! 8O
timestamp of the above line in dmesg reflects this difference too.

I then tried
Code:
# emerge sys-apps/haveged
# rc-update add haveged default

but it doesn't help.

It is not important but will be nice to have it resolved.

Thanks for your help.

I never had an issue like this, but:
  • Does haveged start before slim does? Maybe try adding haveged to boot runlevel?
  • Probably a better solution is to try passing an RNG to the VM. For example: http://wiki.qemu.org/Features/VirtIORNG

Etal,

Thanks for your attention and advice. I tried both but they do not help.

Regards,
