PostPosted: Sun Jan 01, 2017 3:33 pm    Post subject: [SOLVED] xorg.conf problem: 2 graphic cards, 1 monitor Reply with quote

I am trying to run two graphic cards (nvidia + radeon) in my PowerMac 11,2 connected via HDMI to one monitor. The purpose is that the Nvidia-card should display the OpenFirmware-Console (PPC-Mac specific thingy) and the Radeon-Card should display the desktop (better HW-acceleration). Both cards are PCI-E, the Nvidia is in the x16-slot, the Radeon in the x8-slot.

The problem is that the Radeon is not able to open a screen.

My config so far:
Code:
$ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/01-device.conf
Section "Device"
    Identifier             "Card_OF"
    Driver                 "nouveau"
    BusID                  "PCI:10:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier             "Card_x86"
    Driver                 "radeon"
    BusID                  "PCI:6:0:0"
EndSection

Code:
$ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/02-screen.conf
Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen_main"
    Device     "Card_x86"
EndSection

#Section "Screen"
#    Identifier "Screen_OF"
#    Device     "Card_OF"
#EndSection

The BusIDs should be fine:
Code:
# scanpci
pci bus 0x000a cardnum 0x00 function 0x00: vendor 0x10de device 0x0141
 NVIDIA Corporation NV43 [GeForce 6600]

[...]

pci domain 0x0001 bus 0x0006 cardnum 0x00 function 0x00: vendor 0x1002 device 0x68f9
 Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Cedar [Radeon HD 5000/6000/7350/8350 Series]

pci domain 0x0001 bus 0x0006 cardnum 0x00 function 0x01: vendor 0x1002 device 0xaa68
 Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Cedar HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 5400/6300 Series]

The config seems to get reckognized, I got no luck however:

Using the Nvidia-card in "Screen_main" via "Card_OF" works, using the Radeon-card via "Card_x86" does not.

What am I missing here?

Can you explain me that please

You have one output device (monitor) connected with a hdmi cable to both gpus?

Usually you do. GPU => cable => output device

--

you may look into xrandr for example

Code:
xrandr --verbose

--

Do you know if your hardware supports VGA passthrough?

I see a lot of guessing work for your xorg-server

Code:
[   395.590] (==) No Layout section.  Using the first Screen section.
[   395.590] (**) |-->Screen "Screen_main" (0)
[   395.590] (**) |   |-->Monitor "<default monitor>"
[   395.590] (**) |   |-->Device "Card_x86"
[   395.590] (**) |   |-->GPUDevice "Card_x86"
[   395.590] (==) No monitor specified for screen "Screen_main".
   Using a default monitor configuration.

What happens if you start with no xorg.conf at all and then run "xrandr --listproviders"?

Sorry for the confusion. In my case it's not VGA-passthrough. The monitor has 2 x HDMI-in, The NVIDIA-card is connected to HDMI-1, the Radeon-card is conntected to HDMI-2. I can switch between the two HDMI-in via buttons on the monitor.

xrandr --verbose

No output since the Radeon cannot open a screen.

My idea was starting with a minimal configuration. The xorg.conf manpage states that only Identifier and in my case Device are mandatory, the others are optional.

So lets assume that monitor should be treated as two monitors.

So you will have to define two monitors in your xorg.conf, one monitor section for each gpu.

You should also read out the EDID of that monitor. No idea how I did it last time

Had some other stuff to do but I advanced at least a little bit on this topic... Not by creating an xorg.conf, but by setting the following kernel parameters: video=offb:off video=nouveaufb:off video=radeonfb:off nouveau.modeset=0 radeon.modeset=1.

Now I get the OpenFirmware boot-prompt on HDMI-1, then while the kernel is booting the console switches to the Radeon on HDMI-2.

X11 though is still not working. It complains about "modesetting: card at 10:0:0 is claimed by a Device section" (the Nvidia card). Which is funny 'cause no drm stuff get'S loaded for the Nvidia card.
Code:

Finally I got it sorted out with help from #gentoo-powerpc and Xorg-Devs!

I needed 2 things, proper boot parameters for the kernel, which in my case were video=offb:off video=nouveaufb:off video=radeonfb:off nouveau.modeset=0 radeon.modeset=1 and a simple /etc/X11/xorg.conf:
Code:
Section "ServerFlags"
    Option "AutoAddGPU" "false"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier             "Card_x86"
    Driver                 "radeon"
#    Driver                 "modesetting"
    BusID                  "PCI:6@1:0:0"
EndSection

This way I get the OpenFirmware-bootprompt of the Nvidia on HDMI-1. When the kernel loads, the Nvidia-card is ignored, only the Radeon DRM is loaded and gets the framebuffer console at fb0 on HDMI-2. The xorg.conf is needed for telling X it should not auto-add the first card, but to strictly use the one in the Device section. lspci shows "06:00:0" for my Radeon. So the suitable BusID for xorg.conf would be "PCI:6:0:0" - which works for the modesetting driver. However the radeon driver wants the BusID in the more strict format "bus[@domain]:device[:func]", which in my case is "PCI:6@1:0:0".

Now I got a fully accelerated desktop on my G5 with a standard (no MacBIOS) Radeon HD card. :)
