ampache under nginx?

I have ampache running under ngnix. I get no errors. The test.php gives all OK. But I don't see any media and clicking on either Preferences, Modules, and Admin buttons results in nothing.

I guess the problem is in my nginx.conf file. I've tried the one at https://github.com/ampache/ampache/wiki/Installation but this results in an error at the first if in the file (is $request_filename pre-defined somewhere?)

Any clues where I can find hints on how to set up ampache under nginx?

There are internal variables pre-defined by nginx or in *_params files which are in /etc/ngninx. https://nginx.org/en/docs/varindex.html
