How to run a GeForce GTX only in 2D in KDE?

How can i configure a NVIDA GeForce GTX 1080 driver so that it only runs in 2D, does this save power (watt)?

I think you can force/load the "vesa" driver that should be only 2D

As for power saving I doubt the "vesa" driver would do that well, better to get a lighter card,
actually if I had a 1080 series card I would definitely want 3D thats what it is designed for?
