PostPosted: Mon Dec 19, 2016 3:18 am    Post subject: PC freeze on GPU operation mayb due to kernel driver or mesa Reply with quote

UPDATE-I: I am suspecting mesa or the kernel driver now. The problem happens with the xorg nouveau and the xorg modesetting driver.

Hello,

I have a problem when I use the nouveau video driver in version 1.0.13. The problem did only happen so far when I used app-emulation/wine to play a game (namely MassEffect 2, I haven't tried others). It happens unexpectedly or at least I didn't find a pattern.

I can not use ALT-tab to switch to another program. I can move the mouse pointer but I can not click any buttons, I can not leave the game (fullscreen mode) like calling the ingame console or using ALT-F4. The mouse pointer is trapped on that monitor where the game runs (I have two). The sound keeps playing and sound effects are played now and then too.
I tried to get to the terminals via CTRL-ALT-F[1-6] but nothing happens. Switching (KDE) desktops via CTRL-ALT-[arrow-left,arrow-right] is just the same. What does work is the "magic keys" right-ALT-print-[s,u,b] (sync, unmount and boot).

So the kernel still runs, the keyboard and mouse are not frozen. Can Xorg deny access to the terminals? I doubt that wine or the game itself can deny access to other running programs.

I checked the logfiles and got these entries:
Code:

That looks like there is some problem with the kernel driver, but that does not neccessarily mean that that causes the problem.
I downgraded to xf86-video-nouveau -1.0.12 and had no problems so far.

Please explain what's likely happening!

No criticism, just to know why: I am using [quote] sometimes on purpose because you can not print strings bold in [code].

In my opinion, this mean that the ~amd64 branch is testing/unstable and can have bugs and the amd64 branch is stable and is suppose the have none.

When Xorg starts, it takes full control of the keyboard. This is why Alt-Fn (not Ctrl-Alt-Fn, but regular Alt-Fn) ceases to switch terminals while Xorg is active. Since terminal switching is useful, Xorg defines Ctrl-Alt-Fn as a request to switch terminals. This only works when Xorg reads the key sequence, interprets it as Ctrl-Alt-Fn, and decides to switch terminals for you. If Xorg is sufficiently broken (or hung due to driver bugs, or due to hardware fault, etc.), then it will not react to those requests and you cannot switch. This differs from the Linux console, where Alt-Fn is handled by the kernel and can be used to switch away from a hung program (assuming that program has not taken full control of the keyboard, as Xorg does).

As you noticed, the kernel's sysrq keys are processed even when Xorg has full control of the keyboard. Such keys will work as long as the kernel has a working keyboard driver, although if the system is in a bad enough state, the actions triggered by those keys might fail. In particular, trying to Sync while your storage devices are in a very bad state may not complete.

I see.
I read this as "file a bug".

Try switching from DRI3 to DRI2 (had issues with DRI3 in the past)

and/or using gallium (doesn't apply to older Kepler cards such as GTX760, so don't know how it affects operation with Titan Z which might also be a Kepler ...)

How do I do that? Right now dri3proto and dri2proto are emerged.
I have mesa-13.0.2 w/ "dri3" and "gallium" use flags turned on.
So
Code:
USE="-dri3" emerge mesa
would do it?

EDIT: I need d3d9 for wine and that requires dri3.

yes, either that or setting it via xorg.conf

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/intel_graphics#DRI3_issues

oh, in that case it's not an option :(

hm, needs more reports and/or info:

another hit: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=80865

There are a bunch of similar bug reports filed on freedesktop.org. The bug regarding your link is from 2014.
I can not see much progress for these reports. Is there a shortage in the nouveau team?

yep, sort of:

http://phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Samuel-AMD-Valve

also Nvidia doesn't make it easy with their policy ...

Does this belong to the same problem or is it just a coincidence?

UPDATE
This happened with the modesetting driver several times as well.
Code:
May 17 12:52:40 [kernel] [51805.525852] nouveau 0000:03:00.0: fifo: SCHED_ERROR 0a [CTXSW_TIMEOUT]
May 17 12:52:40 [kernel] [51805.525855] nouveau 0000:03:00.0: fifo: gr engine fault on channel 2, recovering...
At one occasion it froze when resuming.

special case:
Suspend and resume at the same second?! The system did not freeze when the first error occured ("fifo: write fault at 0023a5c000 engine") but only a bit later. It usually freezes almost instantly - there are usually (almost?) no other steps taken by the kernel. As it can be seen here there are a lot of suspend things done. I removed all the drive and network messages here to provide an easy look at the (hopefully important) messages.

I should check if this happens with a recent kernel as well - I guess the driver was updated from 4.8.2 to 4.11.1. The modesetting driver is using the kernel nouveau driver, right?
However, since there is the suspicion that mesa is causing the problem I checked my log files. While the system was using mesa-17.0.5 there was no crash while they happened with 17.1.0{,rc_?} and 17.0.4 (mayb earlier too). I am using 17.0.6 now because 17.0.5 is not in the tree anymore.

PS:
The wikipedia reads "… the Kepler microarchitecture (GK-codenamed chips) …"
$> lspci | grep TITAN
03:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK110B [GeForce GTX TITAN Z] (rev a1)
04:00.0 3D controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK110B [GeForce GTX TITAN Z] (rev a1)

PPS:
Does somebody have experiences with updating (flashing) the video BIOS of nVidia VGAs? There is an executable that updates the card but I wouldn't want to make everything worse - the focus of the vendors is on windows, right?

PPPS:
Is this of any relevance? What about
"(EE) /dev/dri/card0: failed to set DRM interface version 1.4: Permission denied" in the Xorg.1.log? Does
"Apr 23 21:07:01 [kernel] [45579.567747] traps: ck-remove-direc[14460] trap int3 ip:7f960e53bef1 sp:7ffc4489ea90 error:0 in libglib-2.0.so.0.5000.3[7f960e4ec000+112000]"
in the kernel log play a role?
