I just successfully install Sybase 16 SP02 Developer Edition on my Gentoo Linux box.

Steps I took for the install:
1. Make sure you have Java installed.
2. Download the package from https://www.sap.com/community/topic/ase-custom-applications.html.
3. Unpack the archive.
4. Documentation recommend to create a dedicated user under which to install, configure and run the installation. I didn't do it and ran the install under my regular user.
5. Change to the directory where you unpack it and run ./setup.bin to start GUI installer.
6. Follow the wizard till the end
7. When install wizard finishes it will automatically start configuration wizard.Follow this wizard as well.
7a. In configuration wizard when setting up "sa" user, the password field was disabled.
8. After configuration wizard finishes, an installer will attempt to start the server.
9. Click done after everything was successful.
10. Execute "export SYBASE=/opt/sap, where /opt/sap is an installation directory.
11. Make sure that server is actually running by executing "/opt/sap/install/showserver"
12. Execute "/opt/sap/OCS-16_0/bin/isql64 -U<user_id> -P<password> -S<server_name>" to check that you can connect tothe server.
12a. If you get an error about locale, edit the file $SYBASE/locale/locales.dat and add the appropriate locale in the "[linux]"part of the config.
12b. Also check the /opt/sap/interfaces file. The file should contain following:
