Coming back to Gentoo after having been away awhile, and I noticed that there are some new DEs listed in the Wiki page. I was specifically curious about anyone's experience running Pantheon, Lumina, or Budgie, on Gentoo, and any recommendations and/or gotchas they care to pass along.
Lastly, I've noticed lots of initiatives for building "lightweight" DEs, (which Lumina and Pantheon describe themselves as), and I understand the appeal this has for older machines. However, if you are using a new system, with lots of system resources, does the "weight" of the DE matter? IOW, is there a positive case to be made for "heavyweight" environments?

Compiling takes a bit longer - installing and updating. But I feel like you can configure them more and make them better suited for you. Also Id imagine they are a bit more stable (more tested as well). Then theres a better feel for unity, since if you choose KDE you get all these Qt applications you need.
In the end you choose what you like more, but Id say if you have hardware resources it doesnt matter what you run - they all will be fast, some look better than the others. |
