Hi all

Is there anybody managed to install xorg-server-1.19 + intel + nvidia in PRIME configuration?
I understand that 1.19 is far from being stable, but tearing is hardly bearable...

I tried dropping block in nvidia-drivers-375.20 and installing, but it just results in crashes.
My configuration is kernel-4.8.5 (vanilla) and GeForce GT 640M LE + Intel Corporation 3rd Gen

I tried the 375.20 driver with my Nvidia Geforce 970M (single GPU laptop). I wanted to try out the Xorg Server 1.19.0. But the 375.20 driver is really unstable! I had to revert back to the 375.10 Nvidia driver.

There is an Upstream bug open about this driver: Home > CUDA ZONE > Forums > GPU Unix Graphics > Linux > Problems with multiple OpenGL applications running simultaneously with 375.20 on a GTX970 ...
So just wait for the next Nvidia beta update - with the fix integrated!

Bob

Hi all

I managed to solve PRIME issue at last.
Some steps + configs:

1. Emerge nvidia-drivers-375.26 (kms flag on) and xorg-server-1.19
2. Use following xorg.conf and change busId appropriately.

Code:

Section "Files"
     ModulePath      "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
     #ModulePath "/opt/xorg/lib/xorg/modules,/usr/lib64/opengl/nvidia,/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
     #ModulePath "/usr/lib64/opengl/nvidia"

     FontPath        "/usr/share/fonts/corefonts/"
     FontPath        "/usr/share/fonts/TTF/"
     FontPath        "/usr/share/fonts/baemuk-fonts/"
     FontPath        "/usr/share/fonts/freefonts/"
     FontPath        "/usr/share/fonts/fft-bitstream-vera/"
     FontPath        "/usr/share/fonts/urw-fonts/"
     FontPath        "/usr/share/fonts/arphic-fonts/"
     FontPath        "/usr/share/fonts/default/"
     FontPath        "/usr/share/fonts/terminus/"
     FontPath        "/usr/share/fonts/misc/"
     FontPath        "/usr/share/fonts/OTF"
     FontPath        "/usr/share/fonts/Type1/"
     FontPath        "/usr/share/fonts/100dpi/"
     FontPath        "/usr/share/fonts/75dpi/"
EndSection

Section "ServerFlags"
    Option "DontZap" "false"
EndSection

Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "layout"
    Screen 0 "nvidia"
    Inactive "intel"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Driver "nvidia"
    BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Device "nvidia"
    Option "AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "intel"
    Driver "modesetting"
    BusID  "PCI:0:2:0"
    Option "AccelMethod" "none"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "intel"
    Device "intel"
EndSection

Section "Extensions"
    Option         "Composite" "Enable"
    #Option         "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection

Section "DRI"
    Group 0
    Mode 0666
EndSection

3. Create etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-drm.conf containing
Code:

options nvidia_drm modeset=1

... it will enable KMS modesetting for nvidia. It's effect can be checked after reboot using
Code:

# cat /sys/module/nvidia_drm/parameters/modeset
Y

... it will enable PRIME synchronization meaning "tearing off" :)

4. Change your login manager startup script (like kde4 /usr/share/config/kdm/Xsetup) adding:
Code:

xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0
xrandr --auto

5. Change your .xinitrc the same way
Code:

xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0
xrandr --auto

6. Reboot to load new nvidia kernel modules.

7. To make sure PRIME is working, run:
Code:

$ xrandr --verbose | grep PRIME
   PRIME Synchronization: 1
   PRIME Synchronization: 1
   PRIME Synchronization: 1
   PRIME Synchronization: 1

... zeroes mean sync is off => investigate your configs/logs/steps above.

P.S.
Step 4,5 are necessary to avoid famous "black" screen after X starts.

I finally got it to work here, I think I was missing the kernel parameter for nvidia_drm module, thanks a lot. My config ended up a bit different tho, here's what I ended up with:

ASUS XL550N laptop
Xorg 1.18.4
NVidia 375.26

Code:

Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "layout"
    Screen 1 "nvidia"
    Inactive "intel"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Driver "nvidia"
    BusID "PCI:4:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Device "nvidia"
    Option "AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier  "intel"
    Driver      "modesetting"
    BusID       "PCI:0:2:0"
    Option      "AccelMethod"  "none"
EndSection

No PRIME sync for me, but I don't even care, I couldn't get this to work at all, and now it's fine. Hope this helps someone.

FYI, just updated to 1.19 for PRIME Synchronization, config is the same. Everything worked fine. I noticed a very slight input lag, which is normal with vsync, but since I don't game on this laptop it won't bother me too much.

Hi,

stupid question, but how do you use the nvidia card with this setting.
I followed your guides and have
Code:

user@host ~ $ xrandr  --verbose | grep PRIME
   PRIME Synchronization: 1
   PRIME Synchronization: 1
   PRIME Synchronization: 1
   PRIME Synchronization: 1
   PRIME Synchronization: 1
user@host ~ $ modinfo nvidia | grep version
version:        378.09
srcversion:     84086EBCF32E9D2B755E029
vermagic:       4.4.39-gentoo SMP mod_unload modversions
user@host ~ $

but how can I switch between the cards?

Cheers

You already are using the Nvidia card. You can't switch out of it.

That's what I thought, but it's not showing up in glxinfo:

Code:

user@host: ~ $ glxinfo  | grep vendor
server glx vendor string: SGI
client glx vendor string: Mesa Project and SGI
OpenGL vendor string: VMware, Inc.
user@host: ~ $

I just cant seem to get this to work..like really, this is frustrating.
I use a Dell Inspiron 7559 with an i7 6700hq and HD530+960M.

/etc/init.d/xdm start gives me a black screen, backlight is turned off.

I just cant seem to get this to work..like really, this is frustrating.
I use a Dell Inspiron 7559 with an i7 6700hq and HD530+960M.

/etc/init.d/xdm start gives me a black screen, backlight is turned off.

kernels: 4.8-gentoo / 4.9.9-vanilla nvidia-drivers 378.09

...

Did you add these commands to the initialization of the X server?

Code:
xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0
xrandr --auto

Did you add the kernel parameter for nvidia_drm?

This is weird, now after deleting /root/.xinitrc with those 2 xrandr lines i get an image with startx and glxinfo reports the nvidia gpu, yay!
SDDM still gives me a black screen :/
