Gentoo 64 bit. Recent install of xfce. Attempting to switch gtk themes. No effect. I switch to a theme that I know is dark & blue yet things remain light: nothing happens.
To clarify: using Settings Manger -> Appearance. We're talking gtk, not the xfwm theme. xfwm themes work.
Thank you. |

Does it change to the correct theme if you log out and back in again?
I seem to remember something similar with MATE 1.8 which is one of the reasons I switched to XFCE. Something to do with a glib issue IIRC, but I do remember the correct theme would appear by logging out and back in again. |

Yes, before plasma5 I used xfce4 and now I use it on my virtual machine and I have no problem with changing themes.
You can try to create a new temporary user and see if also with this you have problem with themes. _________________ Questions are guaranteed in life; Answers aren't. |

Had been changing gtk themes via Appearances submenu. Not to be confused with xfwm themes, which have been working
Logging out and back again didn't help. Neither did rebooting.
I finally stumbled onto a solution, while fixing something else. Setting up policy kit as described here was the cure. Most unexpected.
Thank you every one for the replies. |

You need dbus running for Xfce settings changes to be applied. |
