virtualization vga/pci passthrough ovmf-edk2 questions

Hi.

I am trying to build a dual boot machine that boots inside libvirt. The host running the guests, is a gentoo without any fb/usb/audio support. only has network and virtualization. it works ok. no error whatsoever i could post.

it starts 2 other guests that dont use pci passthrough.

I only have problems with the machine that actually use pci passthrough.

first of all, i figured out how to boot grub by adding a boot option from efi bios ovmf thingie. what i dont get, is why windows always is booting by default. and grub gets overwritten every time by default.

and second of all. in windows the nvidia adaptor reports problems. in linux, the console works but x wont start.

third, yes nouveau loads as usual, firmware is ok. am sure it's not the kernel. even plymouth works. just X wont start.

but i was wondering, is there any way for that ovmf bios thingie to use a pci passthrough device to actually display on that card?

right now, i use the lazy virt-machine to add every pci device. sound works. usb works. only video has issues. i was wondering if it's not that parameter x-vga that libvirt doesn't support. maybe that would tie things up with a bow. any thoughts?

for some odd reason, everything works and nothing works.

from the guest point of view i mean.

haven't changed the host at all. still have that vgaarb thingie i think it's the problem.

but from guest point of view, i tried different things.

in one configuration i had console. text console. seemed to be accelerated. i think with nouveau but dont know how.

meanwhile nvidia drivers works fine with vga-passthrough. i mean... really works great. with X. no console support.

nouveau doesn't work at all. no console on actual passthrough monitor even though kernel says it works. X says no screen available even though there is /etc/dri/card0 there. as usual.

haven't tried windows.

actually I am in windows now, but in a different windows.


PS sound bugs me. it creeks and quacks and whatever for a few seconds at first.
