Hello everyone!

After upgrading to Gnome 3.20 I have the following problem. I can start and use gnome, but when starting certain applications gnome-shell segfaults, the session is killed and I'm thrown back to the gdm login screen.

Things that work:
Chromium
GEdit
Gnome Control Center
Gnome Nautilus

Things that cause a crash:
Popups in Chromium
Open file dialog (e.g. attaching a file to an e-mail in chromium)
starting Gnome Terminal
starting VLC (using QT5 interface, the error message points to a GTK+ problem)
LibreOffice

The crashes are 100% reproducible. I tried updating GTK+ to 3.22.2, but that did not help. I did not yet try to update Gnome{shell, session,*} to 3.22 because of dependency and keywording hell. I have the problem on two different machines (sharing the packages compiled by one of them). One has a radeon card, the other one intel, so I don't think it is a graphics problem. I recompiled xorg-server, GTK+, gnome-shell and gnome-session with MAKEOPTS=j1 and distcc disabled. I tried googling but the only thing I could find was a problem with Gnome Terminal related to locale settings. I've no idea how to diagnose this further, so any help would be appreciated.

Those numbers are only useful to someone who has debug information specific to the faulting code. You will likely need to collect more debugging information than is included in your post. Start by rebuilding gnome-shell and libgtk-3.so as described in Project:Quality Assurance/Backtraces and reproducing the problem. Post a backtrace of the resulting crash. You may need to start gdb on a text console (or over ssh from a separate machine), attach it to the gnome-shell, then provoke the crash. Gnome shell will appear to hang when gdb traps the crash. You should then switch to the text console (or other machine) and check the output. Your X session may be mostly hung when Gnome shell is paused by the crash. You might find gdb's ability to log to file useful for recording the backtrace output.

Wow! Problem solved! Reading the backtrace, I noticed several references to libmutter and libglib. So I reemerged both with CFLAGS="-march=native -pipe -O2 -ggdb" and now I can't reproduce the crashes.
I will try to reemerge with CFLAGS="-march=x86-64 -mtune=generic -O2 -pipe" and see what happens.

I am glad that your system works for you now, but a bit concerned that a rebuild fixed it. Nothing you changed should have mattered as to whether it crashed. It might be the case that two or more packages depended on some structure definition matching, and some of them had not been rebuilt after the last time the structure changed. This is bad practice because it causes transient errors like the one that affected you, but some packages do it anyway.

I have to sign of for today, but I will let you know what happens after I rebuild the packages with my usual CFLAGS. Another difference is, I usually use distcc{,-pump} and disabled the feature for the rebuild with -ggdb. Maybe I'm able to re-reproduce the crashes. Unfortunately I already deleted the gdb logfile, because I wanted to start fresh after recompiling mutter and glib with debug info. Let me know if I can provide any more info.

I reemerged the packages with distcc-pump enabled and CFLAGS="-march=x86-64 -mtune=generic -O2 -pipe".
So far, no more crashes. Thanks for your help.

Hello,

I have a similar problem. System starts fine. But the gdm login screen has no login field. I can't login. After stopping gdm service I get gnome-session-f[5778] segfault in libgtk-3.so.0.2200

What can I do?

Edit 1:

I rebuild glib and mutter

Edit 2:

If I start with startx /usr/bin/gnome-session I get Gnome with Desktop wallpaper and Mouse but no Menu
On Console xauth: file /home/username/.serverauth.13171 does not exists
