Emerging piece for piece as so far already X working. So now I want to get on with KDE4 as KDE5 is still labelled "in development".

So I selected the profile "default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop/kde" as I do not use systemd either. But now the Wiki doesn't has anymore info on KDE4 as they assume you use KDE5.

I tried to emerge kdebase-meta as I always did because I like a basic setup and add later. But now it gets weird:

Code:
# emerge --pretend kde-apps/kdebase-meta

(long list)

The following USE changes are necessary to proceed:
 (see "package.use" in the portage(5) man page for more details)
# required by kde-plasma/kwin-5.7.5::gentoo
# required by kde-plasma/plasma-meta-5.7.5::gentoo[-minimal]
# required by kde-apps/kdebase-meta-16.04.3::gentoo
# required by kdebase-meta (argument)
>=media-libs/mesa-12.0.1 wayland

(some others but those I get)

Now there are 2 things I don't get:
- why am I pulling in plasma if I didn't select that profile?
- why is wayland (which is "experimental") pulled in as a hard requirement? I even have the USE flag set as -wayland.

You have this thread you can read through in regards of staying with kde4. Personally, I recommend installing plasma 5.8.2 and getting on that wagon instead as staying on a dead project won't really serve you well in the long run.

Because kwin:5 on X11 depends on [read: "uses parts of"] kwayland which needs mesa with USE="egl wayland", and yeah that makes just about as much sense to me as it does to anyone else...

Because it is used at runtime.

Not true, read the wiki properly to find out why kdebase-meta is the wrong choice for you now.

You are absolutely right!

As for why staying on a "dead project": I don't like 100% where KDE is going (I prefer 3 over 4) but so far I haven't found any alternative.The minimal DE's are really a bit too minimal and so far KDE let me configure it as I like it.

OK...so I'm not alone not getting it :D

Of course Plasma-5 is 'in development', the alternative would be 'dead as Plasma-4', no? ;)

Yes, but it has a different meaning as "currently supported". "Experimental" and "in development" to me mean the same as "use on your own risk and don't complain if all your data gets lost". It might be semantics but really I stear clear of anything that even faintly smells of "not stable 100%".
