This is a result of a discussion in Gentoo-user that led to my being made aware of a different framebuffer server for VNC - krfb, specifically. I had absolutely no idea that this existed, or that there was even more than one way to do things.

This is an issue with the whole package management system - there's simply not enough searchable metadata in it - there's no way to find related packages (say, all VNC servers, all packages that provide logging, etc...) except if A) they're dependencies, or B) if they have similar words in the name. Adding a keyword-searchable description paragraph to the portage tree would be dandy, and also an extra item of data, say, "keywords" for each package that is fully indexed (so that you can do an emerge --search-keyword "framebuffer" and get any package that uses the framebuffer... There could be a simple search (Like the current -s) and a long search (full description, homepage, etc...)

Worth a look?

Note that if portage was to be modified to do this sort of searching (a task beyond my skills) i'd be more than happy to take on a part of the work of adding descriptions to existing ebuilds... At least one of the trees (that i can understand :? i'll avoid the dev-.* tree, as i'm just not competent in it :) )

That's a very broad level of detail. There should be more.
