Use the appropriate key binding for your virtual machine software. Different hypervisors use different bindings, so you need to tell us what program you are using. Ctrl+Alt is a popular combination, but I have also seen Right-Ctrl.

In Qemu, the running virtual machine must have already grab the mouse and the keyboard for the shortcut Ctrl+Alt+f work.

I use only Qemu in command lines so, with no graphical interface to manage it. I use VirtualBox too who have it's own graphical interface and shortcuts.
