After I upgraded to gnome-3.20 auto-detection of headphone and switching between headphone/speakers has broken. If headphone is connected while booting, then if I switch to speaker, no sound comes out. Sound comes out only through headphones. Same thing vice versa. If booted with speakers, then headphones don't work. Any idea what might be going wrong here. Downgrading pulseaudio from 9 to 8 didn't help either. So it seems something to do with how Gnome 3.20 manages headphones has changed.

[EDIT]opening alamixer and disabling auto-mute for the speaker helped to at least get sound on the speaker. But on unplugging headphones, they don't switch to speakers automatically. The headphones list item is still there in sound settings.[/EDIT]

adding the following line to /etc/pulse/default.pa helped to switch between speakers and headphones automatically.
Code:
load-module module-switch-on-connect

There still is a problem remaining. Now on selecting headphones in the popup gnome crashes and logs out. As a workaround I just cancel the headphone selection dialog.

Problem seems to be with hardened-sources. Moving to gentoo-sources fixed the remaining issue.
