I got to 28% and stayed there for quite some time before failing.

Possible memory issue try compile it with MAKEOPTS="-j1"

Or with temporary swap space if you don't have any or much.

Well, it's gone past 28%. Do I need to shut this thing down and run a RAM check?

Nailed it, my swap space was off.

I had the exact same error compiling `cmake` on a machine with 16GB RAM. But I had no active swap space. For reference, here is one way to cure it.

Code:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp/tswap bs=1M count=2000
mkswap /tmp/tswap ; swapon /tmp/tswap

Something seems wrong about a package that requires a swap partition. I guess the ebuild should make it a requirement or cleverly add a token swap space temporarily if none are active.
