My Gentoo system is booting and running Enlightenment 0.17 for the first time today.
I'm an old school Enlightenment user... I hand built my first Enlightenment window manager on a Solbourne color workstation years ago. (Back when a COLOR monitor was a big deal, and the workstation cost $5-12K).
So.. now for my Enlightenment questions in modern times.

From the Gentoo page on enlightenment, 0.17 is in the portage tree, but for the newer releases:
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Enlightenment

Code:

At the time of writing, you need to install E18 from testing.

root #emerge --ask --autounmask-write x11-wm/enlightenment:0.17/0.18.8

So as a newbie I installed 0.17. It seems to start OK with a couple of shortcomings. (will cover later)

I tried the newer e19 emerge and get this error:
Code:

emerge --ask --autounmask-write x11-wm/enlightenment:0.17/0.19.4

...
emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "x11-wm/enlightenment:0.17/0.19.4"

So clearly I'm a newbie and am missing something to achieve true "enlightenment" at level 19 :).

Questions
#1) How does one go about emerging the newer enlightenment revisions.
#2) Which Revision would one recommend?

#3) Given revision 0.17 I see the following issues, which I plan to investigate and clean up/fix
Eterm
3A) Eterm is not mentioned... it's cool because it has a transparent background capability.
When x11-term/eterms is emerged, it works, *but* Enlightenment does not find it and populate the menus.
It does this properly for xterm and UXterm.
Is this a bug? Or did someone decide that Eterm is depricated. If it's a bug.. I will submit it... (I might submit it anyway)
Menus
3B) How does one update the menus in E17... it's been 10-15 years since I've mucked with customizing the menus for Enlightenment.
Web resources would be good... if there are not any, I will probably eventually get around to posting some tips.. but if I do, I will probably want
to be working on the E20 versions... so might want to join the Enlightenment support folks as time permits. (Assuming I have anything to
contribute.
Themes
3C) How does one get Themes to get applied... when I import a theme then "apply" nothing changes.
Back in the dark ages (400Mhz Solbourne or SunOS machines) you see, changing a theme changed EVERYTHING.
Desktop Background, mouse click sounds, window decorations, etc etc. So thats kind of the capability I was looking for in E17.
So tips on debugging this would be useful (log files to inspect, code to attach a debugger to etc).

This excludes the issue of out of date themes which can't import. (It might be that importing is broken, as I'm guessing revision checking of the files is sort of non-existent.
Ripple Effect
3D) Ripple effect.
Back in ancient times (early Enlightenment) there was a "ripple" menu item for the desktop background, this would be really cool if you had a lake as the desktop background, as the lake would have ripples on the water. I don't see this menu item any more. :( What happened?

So I imagine a lot of these issues may be not GENTOO related, but I thought I would start with E17 what the Gentoo community thinks is the proper Enlightenment sandbox to be playing in.

Thanks!

As you can see there is 0.20.5 marked as stable in portage.
Code:
* x11-wm/enlightenment
     Available versions:
     (0)    **0.16.9999 1.0.17
     (0.17) **0.17.9999(0.17/0.17.9999) 0.20.5(0.17/0.20.5) (~)0.20.6(0.17/0.20.6)

To install execute
Code:
emerge -av enlightenment

NB! Wiki is often outdated.

Thanks for the breadcrumb.

What command did you issue to get the list of available packages?

When I did an emerge --search enlightenment, I didn't get the same output.

I've emerged to the latest flavor... so I'll see what that is like. Thanks.

I get the following now from emerge --search
Code:

*  x11-wm/enlightenment
      Latest version available: 1.0.17
      Latest version installed: 1.0.17
      Size of files: 2,361 KiB
      Homepage:      https://www.enlightenment.org/
      Description:   Enlightenment Window Manager (e16)
      License:       BSD

[ Applications found : 1 ]

Thanks I'll see how good/bad this new flavor is.

That looks like output from app-portage/eix.
