PostPosted: Tue Sep 13, 2016 11:34 pm    Post subject: [SOLVED] Troubles starting xorg (on a G5, AGP Radeon) Reply with quote

Did a fresh install from the Gentoo PPC iso on my PowerMac G5 7,3 which went rather smoothly so far. I got the system running with a 32bit multilib install, systemd, network, sshd, nfs. etc. on gentoo-sources-4.4.19 and gentoo-sources-4.7.3. The framebuffer console works, but I was not able to get X running...

The insides of my PowerPC G5 7,3:
Code:

Seems like the correct driver "radeon" is being picked up by xorg but is unable to open a screen. I can't see what I am doing wrong... :? I am running mesa 12.0.x and xorg-server-1.14.8 because this combination works fine on Ubuntu MATE 16.10 on this very machine. So far I rebuilt the x11-modules with and without USE=glamor, with and without USE=libkms but I had no success.

Any advice? Is someone maybe running a similar configuration with a known-good combination of xorg-server, drivers and USE-flags?

You may change that to fbdev

You wrote you are using a framebuffer, so you may need fbdev too set. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_framebuffer

Generic advise: There is always a wiki or some linux forum from different distros which already had the same issue.

You may need to specify a screen section yourself in your xorg.conf

Thanks! Now at least I get something to see with fbdev and an appropriate xorg.conf

Unfortunately not in this case. And the very similar setup in Ubuntu-MATE ppc (xorg-server-1.18.4, xf86-video-ati-7.7.0) just works.

Yep, X is working so this issue is resolved.

Here is the /etc/X11/xorg.conf I needed to explicitly setting the fbdev driver:
Code:
Section "Device"
        Identifier      "Card0"
        Driver      "fbdev"
EndSection

x11-base/xorg-drivers has to be built with +fbdev then.

For the non working x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati-7.7.0 I filed bug https://bugs.gentoo.org.

Took this problem upstream and it turned out to be a kernel configuration issue. On my config it was crucial to have VGA Arbitration selected in the kernel .config to get both, framebuffer console and X, working. Without needing an xorg-config file!

I ended up using following options in my kernel:
Code:
Device Drivers  --->
   Graphics support  --->
      <M> /dev/agpgart (AGP Support)  --->
         <M>   Apple UniNorth & U3 AGP support
      [*] VGA Arbitration
      (16)  Maximum number of GPUs
      <M> Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 4.1.0 and higher DRI support)  --->
         [*]   Enable legacy fbdev support for your modesetting driver
      <M> ATI Radeon
      Frame buffer Devices  --->
      {*} Support for frame buffer devices  --->
         [*] Open Firmware frame buffer device support
         < > ATI Radeon display support
         < > ATI Rage128 display support
         < > ATI Mach64 display support

As I said the most important part is to have VGA_ARB enabled. Furthermore if FB_OF and DRM_FBDEV_EMULATION are selected you should NOT use any of the other framebuffers (FB_RADEON, FB_ATY128, FB_ATY, etc.).

During the boot process the OpenFirmware Framebuffer (FB_OF) is used which hands over to the DRM_FBDEV_EMULATION providing the console display. You will notice the following kernel messages if everything went fine:
Code:
# dmesg | grep -i fb
[    0.409240] fb0: Open Firmware frame buffer device on /pci@0,f0000000/ATY,PitonParent@10/ATY,Piton_A@0
[    0.409846] fb1: Open Firmware frame buffer device on /pci@0,f0000000/ATY,PitonParent@10/ATY,Piton_B@1
[   75.994364] fb: switching to radeondrmfb from OFfb ATY,Piton_
[   76.018605] fb: switching to radeondrmfb from OFfb ATY,Piton_
[   76.495668] [drm] fb mappable at 0xA0040000
[   76.495688] [drm] fb depth is 24
[   76.593111] radeon 0000:f0:10.0: fb0: radeondrmfb frame buffer device

After that, X starts properly without he need of a config file! At least if you don't get hit by other ppc-specific xorg-bugs wich require setting some xorg-options...

Maybe this is helpful to some people as the Gentoo PPC Installation Handbook recommends other config options which provide console support but prevent X from starting properly (as on my machine and with a recent kernel).
