I want to understand Linux better. After reading posts and threads, I have discovered that gentoo would be great for it (Arch too, but I am afraid, it is just like debian-level-difficulty linux (I use debian, ubuntu, mint for 5 years), but with no installer, and one additionally command in the terminal to download and install DE after the first boot-up).
Where should I start? Should I simply copy and paste gentoo installation via youtube? should I read some book about gentoo before installation (a book which would be for debian or ubuntu user)?
I am sorry if this is a wrong section of the forum to ask this question.

Hi m_p_w,

Welcome to Gentoo! It's always best to start with the Gentoo Handbook. There's a fair amount of educational material in there. Have a look at that and then feel free to ask any questions that you have.

Handbook is definitely the place to start.

My first Gentoo install took about a week. I started with the handbook, and then every little detail I had a question about I either googled or I asked a question about it.

I found that the Gentoo docs and the Arch docs are the most helpful and mostly everything on each is relevant to the other. Obviously package management is different, but that's about it.

Personally I feel that the arch forum is less tolerant of people who should have used a search engine.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7dTjpvakmA

this commercial came out in 2003. i think it describes perfectly what linux is, what unix was and what will happen next. and our place in it.

the beauty of linux is that u can look inside it. gentoo especially, u can really look inside it.

there is no short way. the more you learn, the more you know. it's that simple. learn... just look inside it.

If you install with a wifi network and do not want to download LiveDVD (2GiB) use SystemRescueCD (gentoo based), that it have best wireless card support compared to minimal cd.
