I have xfce4.12 installed, and it starts fine using startxfce4 or startx.

Then I installed xdm display manager (1.1.11-r3) and slim graphical login manager 1.3.6-r5. When I try to log in I get a strange dbus error promt: "Unable to contact settings server. Failed to connect to socket /tmp/dbus-YBD8MzWEST: Connection refused". Then I click 'close' and get booted back to a terminal before xdm relaunches. The results are the same if I attempt logging in as root instead of my normal user.

I've tried various things in my .xinitrc, all to no avail:
Code:
exec xfce4-session

Code:
exec startxfce4

Code:
exec ck-launch-session startxfce4

Code:
exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session xfce4-session

I've checked all the relevant system logs, and I don't see any major red flags:
Code:

I am not a SLiM user as I got very frustrated with it.

I remember when I tried SLiM I had to press F1 (I think) a few times to select a different "session". The "default" was to use the failsafe and thus will not start XFCE. Pressing the magic F1 will make it cycle through "xfce-session" (or something indicating xfce) at the bottom of the screen, and when that is displayed, logging in will start xfce. I didn't pursue it further after switching to lightdm which works out of the box and allowed session choices to be made by GUI instead of the awkward F1 keyboard.

Not sure if this is the problem you're seeing but it had some similarities of the issues I had with SLiM.

Mine is defaulting to Xfce Session. There's also an Xsession session available. I tried that, and got a new error: unable to execute login command. Again, absolutely nothing useful in the slim.log... I'll look into that a bit because I'm at an absolute dead end with the dbus error. Maybe I'll try lightdm. I do like the look and feel of SLiM, unfortunate that it seems to be not so well maintained anymore. I can't even find a project website or some "official" location for the source code.

SLiM has lots of problems, but in this case it's only doing as it's told - listing/executing the files in /usr/share/xsessions.

If those don't work they're your real problem, use `qfile /usr/share/xsessions` to direct blame appropriately.

My .xinitrc works perfectly for an Xfce session. I do want an xfce session, but I've kind of hit a dead end in troubleshooting the associated dbus error. I have manually run startx, startxfce4, and "./.xinitrc" and all work perfectly. Dbus is running. So I have no idea what problem SLiM has with my preferred xfce session. It logs no errors.

Re: xsessions: I'm not "blaming" SLiM for xsessions not working, I tried an alternative session type for shits and giggles to see if I could get something (anything) to work. Unfortunately it didn't but since the error is different I'm planning to dig deeper unless somebody has further ideas on what the hell might be wrong with the xfce session.
