Well, I guess the title says it all... I'm using GDM and Gnome 3.20.1, and when I select Gnome Wayland in GDM and enter my password, I end up at the log-in prompt again. It really just flashes once, and then resets (like it restarts the log-in). If I then enter my password again, it starts Wayland properly, and everything works as it should (well, except some minor Gnome/Wayland bugs left to iron out).

Any clues as to why this is happening? When I start Gnome (X), it works at the first entry of my password, and the same at the TTY.

I had this same issue without Wayland since GNOME 3.14 (specifically, GNOME without systemd on ~).

To the best of my knowledge, it went away when I updated to the 4.7.x line of the Linux Kernel and version 367.44 of the NVIDIA drivers. It could be due to another package in ~ but if you are on it as well, you can probably rule that out.

Perhaps what fixed it for X broke it for Wayland?

Well, that's interesting! Weird that we're seeing it on different graphics stacks, since it feels like it should be related to security/GDM or Gnome + Wayland/X (since I'm not seeing it on Gnome + X). I am running on 4.6.6, but will update to 4.7.4 now, so I guess I'll see if it changes the state of the problem.

I still have this issue, but yesterday I spent some time trying to fix it. I checked if there were any pam issues by moving my whole /etc/pam.d/ directory to /etc/pam.d.old/ and then re-emerging the packages that had files in there. I've never edited pam.d-files manually, so the default should work out fine for me.

I'm currently not able to log in using Wayland, since the Gnome 2.24 upgrade, so I have to fix that first to see if it has fixed my problem. I am still seeing weird things being written to the system log though, like:

Code:
Sep 03 18:58:17 skare dbus[358]: [system] Rejected send message, 0 matched rules; type="error", sender=":1.1" (uid=0 pid=362 comm="/lib/systemd/systemd-logind ") interface="(unset)" member="(unset)" error name="org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod" requested_reply="0>
Sep 03 18:58:17 skare dbus[358]: [system] Rejected send message, 0 matched rules; type="error", sender=":1.1" (uid=0 pid=362 comm="/lib/systemd/systemd-logind ") interface="(unset)" member="(unset)" error name="org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod" requested_reply="0>
Sep 03 18:58:17 skare dbus[358]: [system] Rejected send message, 0 matched rules; type="error", sender=":1.1" (uid=0 pid=362 comm="/lib/systemd/systemd-logind ") interface="(unset)" member="(unset)" error name="org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod" requested_reply="0>
Sep 03 18:58:18 skare dbus[358]: [system] Activating via systemd: service name='org.freedesktop.locale1' unit='dbus-org.freedesktop.locale1.service'

Is this something that someone recognizes?

Edit:
I googled the output, and found a systemd bug, that was introduced in 234 and has been fixed in what is to be 235, so it's not what's causing my problems.

I'm seeing some weird stuff in the log, which might be the reason for me not being able to log in with Wayland (instead of Gnome on Xorg).
