i have been using XFCE as my standard desktop for many years due to its minimalist point of view.

today i thought to myself, hey! lets go crazy! and install KDE plasma 5, i am still on openrc, and am using the ~amd64 testing branch.

i noticed that with "htop" KDE plasma without widgets, only compositor is enabled for screen tearing, that KDE is using 1.5 GB Ram ! while i am used to 230 MB on XFCE.

htop shows a process called "/usr/bin/plasmashell --shut-up" which is using a lot of memory, but 1.5GB ram for a standard Desktop !

Question: is this much ram for a standard plasma desktop normal? if so, is it worth using over XFCE?

In which column did you see the 1.5 GB?

plasmashell has reserved ~3950M, but only uses ~235M on my laptop, with quite some widgets and opengl 3.1 compositor.

See the htop man page:
Code:
       M_SIZE (VIRT)
The size of the virtual memory of the process.

       M_RESIDENT (RES)
The resident set size (text + data + stack) of the process (i.e. the size of the  process's  used
            physical memory).

       M_SHARE (SHR)
The size of the process's shared pages.
