All of a sudden when I try to mount a USB disk drive to back up my system, I get a message "Failed to mount "portable". Not authorized to perform operation.

There might have been a time when I knew how to make this work, but I don't remember it now, and am puzzled why somebody would change the rules.

Please help.

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1038986-highlight-authorized+device.html

Create the file /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/55-storage.pkla (the directory tree should already exist), and put this into it:

Code:
[Storage Permissions]
Identity=unix-group:plugdev
Action=org.freedesktop.udisks2.filesystem-mount
ResultAny=yes
ResultActive=yes
ResultInactive=no

Same results if you make this file instead:

Code:
# /etc/polkit-1/rules.d/10-udisks.rules

polkit.addRule(function(action, subject) {
    if (action.id == "org.freedesktop.udisks2.filesystem-mount" && subject.isInGroup("plugdev")) {
        return "yes";
    }
});

I tried both and neither worked.

But, I read the link you posted very carefully and it discussed that you can't just click on the device icon, you must click on the check block.

Stupid error!

Thanks for your help.
