Is there a trick to getting this to work with aterm or Eterm? I got the xterm looking pretty, but aterm, Eterm and my desktop still look pretty ugly.

This one's easy.
Xterm includes XFT support. Aterm and Eterm, do not.
If you really need an anti-aliased terminal, I believe konsole works well.
IMHO Andale Mono (or monotype.com depending on how you have it installed) is a pretty nice font for a terminal, it's not ANSI compliant, but it's clear and easy to read, and resizeable.
If you need ANSI terminal fonts, look for nexus and vga11x19 (depending on size requirements, nexus is tiny, vga11x19 is rather large) |

I have anti-aliasing working with Aterm now. As a matter of fact I'm using Andale Mono. I got this to work following the steps above. Perhaps I'm mistaken and typed xterm instead of aterm by accident. When I get home tonight I can double check. |

I'm having the same problem as well.
Fatal Server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'
I have setup the xfs server on port 7100 and editied the XF86Config file, /etc/X11/fs/config and one more that I saw in this forum. No more Speedo errors like I had.
/var/log/XF blah.log does not really give me a clue. fatal server error is wehat's listed.
Funny... I installed Gentoo 3 times so far and all were last week. No problems getting X running. This week I start from scratch and bang! same system, just a reinstall for practice and X is dead.
Any thoughts? I have scroured the Forums and tried all suggestions to no avail.

I don't see why everyone wants to run the server on port 7100. 
I modified my /etc/init.d/xfs to contain: | Code: | start-stop-daemon --start --quiet --exec /usr/X11R6/bin/xfs \
-- -port -1 -daemon -config /etc/X11/fs/config 1>&2 |
and then in my XF86Config-4 I have: | Code: | FontPath "unix/:-1"

Works fine for me, unless you want the server listening on tcp port 7100 also, change it to -port -1.
