After upgrade to KDE 5 Plasma and going to Application menu -> Settings -> System settings -> Fonts I noted that all fonts where Noto Sans, including the Fixed width font. I carefully noted them down, to be able to revert to the default settings. They were:

Code:
General:           Noto Sans 10
Fixed width:       Noto Sans 9
Small:             Noto Sans 8
Toolbar:           Noto Sans 9
Menu:              Noto Sans 10
Window title:      Noto Sans 10

After I temporarily changed fonts to DejaVu Sans I wanted to revert to the default fonts, Noto Sans. For some reason Noto Sans were not available for Fixed Widht any more. The list of font choices for Fixed Width font has become much shorter that for the other fonts and Noto Sans is missing.

Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Code:
Fixed width:       Noto Sans 9

imo, it's bug. Noto Sans in not monospace font.

I am not quite sure what you mean. Do you also think it is a bug?

I am 100% sure the default setting of fonts was like the table I posted above.

one more thing happened at the same time, as I changed fonts the first time, explained in this post:

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1049188-highlight-.html

I don't know yet if if the two problems are related and have the same root cause.

fixed-width font to this date has always been Oxygen Mono 9, and soon it's going to be Hack.

Did you use "Adjust all fonts" at some point?

Yes, I did use "Adjust all fonts" . Is there a known problem related to this action?

Actually no, I just found that it would not change the 'Fixed width' font setting anyway, it just stays at Oxygen Mono.

So can this be declared solved? There simply is no Noto monospace font.

Unfortunately I can not declare this post SOLVED. When I set Oxygen Mono as the font for Fixed Width I get very bad (unreadable) rendering of the Fixed Widht fonts, see this screenshot:

http://picpaste.com/bad_rendering_of_oxygen_font-yZjlRpP8.png

Something went utterly wrong the first time I tried to change fonts in KDE 5 Plasma. Two posts tell that there is no Notot Sans option for Fixed Width font font. The strange thing is that I am 99.99% sure that all fonts where Noto Sans from the beginning (I wrote them down by hand before I started to change font to be able to manually revert to the defaults).

I still have 2 severe problems that I am not sure if they are related to each other (summarized in this post:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1049188-highlight-.html ), But it is likely they are related since they occurred at the same time.
