PostPosted: Tue Jul 26, 2016 9:11 pm    Post subject: kde-plasma/sddm-kcm crashes when activated [SOLVED] Reply with quote

Only debugging I seem to be getting is:
Code:
rich@graendalwired ~ $ systemsettings5
QDBusArgument: read from a write-only object
Aborted

This is with kde-plasma/sddm-kcm-5.6.5 and kde-plasma/plasma-meta-5.6.5.

Steps to crash: go into Workspace->Startup and Shutdown->SDDM
...
crash

EDIT: Bug posted

EDIT2: Apparently the below items are deemed as duplicate issues. I couldn't find any relation between them beyond that they were all new plasma 5.6.5 issues, but apparently they've been deemed to have the same root cause by the moderators (who are likely understandably perturbed that multiple threads popped up from the same user on different problems). So, here's some other stuff that's not working that shouldn't have anything to do with sddm-kcm...:

  • systemsettings5's Date & Time settings under Regional Settings also crashes the systemsettings GUI with the following output:
    Code:
    rich@graendalwired ~ $ systemsettings5
    QDBusConnection: warning: blocking call took a long time (1489 ms, max for this thread is 200 ms) to service "org.kde.kded5" path "/modules/ktimezoned" interface "org.freedesktop.DBus.Introspectable" member "Introspect"
    QDBusConnection: warning: blocking call took a long time (1630 ms, max for this thread is 200 ms) to service "org.kde.kded5" path "/modules/ktimezoned" interface "org.kde.KTimeZoned" member "initialize"
    KSystemTimeZones: ktimezoned initialize() D-Bus call failed:  "Message recipient disconnected from message bus without replying"

    QDBusArgument: read from a write-only object
    Aborted
  • systemsettings5's Account Details function simply crashes the GUI with the following output:
    Code:
    rich@graendalwired ~ $ systemsettings5
    QDBusArgument: read from a write-only object
    Aborted

Cannot configure background services - appears to time out and state "Unable to contact KDED" after upgrading to plasma 5.6.5. This is the case both with existing users and newly created users (to rule out old config settings).

To get to this point, open systemsettings5, click on Startup and Shutdown, then on Background Services. You will get a short timeout followed by the error message. As a side effect, this prevents the user from configuring and power management options...

At this point it should be clear you have a problem well below random Plasma modules.

Code:
$ emerge --info
$ emerge -uvDNp world
$ equery l -i dev-qt/*
# rc-update show

Regardless of your current issues...
Code:
USE="...gles1 gles2..."

...remove those from your make.conf and rebuild the affected dev-qt/*, kde-frameworks/* and kde-plasma/* packages. Actually it would be a good opportunity for rebuilding all of your installed kde-frameworks/* to see if it fixes your current problem.

Obviously if you don't use it it is not relevant. But obviously if you don't provide the aforementioned information you can only get a general answer.

I was under the impression this was only important for Qt, as apparently only Qt did not "get along" with nvidia for egl, gles1, and gles2. Am I wrong? I've already disabled egl, gles1, and gles2 for Qt (via package.use), but did not do so for kde-frameworks/* nor kde-plasma/*... at any rate, I did the following:
Code:
graendalwired rich # cat > /etc/portage/package.use/egl
dev-qt/* -egl -gles1 -gles2
kde-frameworks/* -egl -gles1 -gles2
kde-plasma/* -egl -gles1 -gles2
graendalwired rich # emerge -avuDN @world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R    ] kde-frameworks/plasma-5.23.0:5/5.23::gentoo  USE="X -debug -egl* -gles2 {-test}" 0 KiB

[ebuild   R    ] kde-plasma/kinfocenter-5.6.5:5::gentoo  USE="handbook nfs opengl pci -debug -egl* -gles -ieee1394 -samba -wayland" 0 KiB

Total: 3 packages (3 reinstalls), Size of downloads: 0 KiB
No dice, it still crashes... How can I trigger a rebuild of kde-frameworks/*?

@KShots,

Having had issues with Plasma 5 / Qt 5 building - since I first switched over (January 2016) I've switched to this belt-n-braces approach...

  1. To update dev-qt/*:5 libraries ...
    Code:
    equery list -F'=$cpv:$slot' dev-qt/* | grep ':5' | xargs emerge -1v

  2. Then update kde-frameworks/* ...
    Code:
    equery list -F'=$cpv:$slot' kde-frameworks/* | xargs emerge -1v

  3. Then update kde-plasma/* ...
    Code:
    equery list -F'=$cpv:$slot' kde-plasma/* | xargs emerge -v

So if you update your dev-qt/*:5 version or USE flags you need to manually build the Plasma 5 stack above this (i.e. 1 then 2 then 3).

If you update your kde-frameworks/* version or USE flags you need to manually build the Plasma 5 stack above this (i.e. 2 then 3).

Otherwise real bad things happen. 8O :o

Check that all your library versions, at each level, are at the same version (or most recent supported) with the above commands as well!!

Portage won't do this stuff automatically for you!!

On the subject of kcm_sddm I've got a KDE Bug out on that... It core dumps everytime I launch it - unless I disable dev-qt/*:5 debug support. :roll:
I'm using the default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop/plasma/systemd system profile btw (perhaps the same?)

Bob

Well, that nails it on the head, then. I have debug support turned on for dev-qt/*:5 because I do a lot of development with Qt5. I can probably disable my debug support now, though, as the gentoo portage tree (and indeed the Qt overlay) doesn't support the Qt5 modules I am using (namely, Qt3d), so I have to have a separate installation of Qt5 outside of my system anyways.

EDIT: Confirmed, disabling debug on dev-qt/*:5 fixes each of the crashes I listed above. Someone may want to note this...

That's new to me, but it is known that enabling the debug use flag changes runtime behaviour. If what you want is crash dumps, the debug flag is wrong anyway.

That is not true. If you have been using live versions or non-tree Qt versions you are certainly more exposed to such issues, but affected Frameworks and Plasma packages use Qt subslots to be automatically rebuilt.
