Any ideas why it fails?

Looks exactly like the usual GCC-5 ABI breakage. In particular exiv2 needing a rebuild, but you should ask yourself if more of your system might be in need of that.

I think I overlooked that ABI breakage back in the day.

Just reading about it and rebuilding

revdep-rebuild --library 'libstdc++.so.6' -- --exclude gcc

392 packages to go - will take a while....

Will prefer trying the new std=gnu11 vs the old std=gnu89, so I'm not going to add -std=gnu89 in my CFLAGS.
