Good evening Gentoo,
After my hard drive died I went and bought a new harddrive and proceeded to re-install Gentoo on my laptop using the latest LiveDVD. In the LiveDVD environment I am able to connect to my AP but 5 seconds later the connection is dropped with no error message at all. It does this when connecting via wired (cat5) or wireless. This same laptop connects fine when I reboot using Windows 7 and had no problems connecting in the past from Linux from my previous Gentoo environment. The AP is not set to block via MAC address and I have an Intel Cougar point PCH using Intel wireless interface (iwlwifi). Can someone please help me find out why I cannot connect to my AP so I can install the Stage3 tarballs.

Is there nothing in dmesg?
This behaviour is seen when two or more network connection managers fight over control of the interface. One brings it up, the next one doesn't know its up so tries to bring it up again.
The visible signs are the interfaces cycling in dmesg.
Wired is harder to spot than wireless. Wireless will show the regulartory stuff being reloaded.
As its the same laptop, hardware MAC Addresses won't have changed.
Try a different CD/DVD. System Rescue CD is a good place to start, in case you don't have a random live DVD lying around.
A magazine cover mount (they are usually inside these days) will do nicely.

| dmesg just says something about the link was deactivated nothing relevant in the logs. |

This seems to be an issue with networkmanager, can you setup your network with 'net-setup' in the console instead? Try this and see if it helps. |

It was there in mid 2002 when I did my first install. Its all that there was then.
Did I mention I used to walk to school and back and it was uphill both ways :)
Its still there as an emergency manual override for when the new(er) automagic fails.

If you ever installed with the minimal install cd then 'net-setup' is what /etc/motd told you to use  |
