Hopefully there's been some progress in the last 10 years on getting Gothic to run in Wine. The last thread I can find on the game is here.
I installed Steam with winetricks in a new 32 bit prefix, then I installed directsound per the advice here.
The main menu works as well as the opening cutscene. As soon as the game loads and the first NPC starts talking the video freezes but the audio continues. If I press alt + tab, the game appears to still be working correctly, but only as long as I don't switch back to the game window. When I do, the screen goes black.
I tried setting dsound back to builtin per this advice but the issue persisted. I also tried removing all the DLL overrides added by installing directsound with winetricks.
I read here that I should set the ALSA driver to emulation, but that advice is ancient and I don't know how to do that.
If I run the game from the terminal Wine throws a whole mess of errors:

| I'm now using version 1.9.11 of Wine. I tried disabling sound completely in the game's config file, disabling fog, installing d3dx9 with winetricks, using different resolutions, color modes, windowed, full screen, Windows XP, Windows 2000... I even tried this with no difference. |
