One of my laptops sits on the kernel selection screen in grub whenever it is rebooted. It says the selected kernel will be automatically booted in 2 seconds but those seconds never count down like they do on my other systems. I think there is an infinite loop involved because the system gets hot and the fans start working hard if it sits on that screen for a long time. Pretty strange. I'm using grub-2.02_beta2-r9. Any ideas?

  • boot from http://www.system-rescue-cd.org using the »boot an installed system« option
  • re-install grub using grub2-install
  • refresh the boot menu using grub2-mkconfig
  • reboot

You nailed it, thank you!

EDIT: Technically, should I be mounting /boot and running grub2-install and grub2-mkconfig every time sys-boot/grub is updated?

See the inherited mount-boot eclass. Also, you should have seen some interesting messages about mounting /boot when you emerged grub.

Yes but mounting aside, should I run grub2-install/grub2-mkconfig whenever the grub package is updated?

If you did, it shouldn't do any harm. Bus as I understand grub2-install is automatically run by the eclass and grub2-mkconfig should not need refresh/update when only grub is updated.

I'm pretty sure grub2-install isn't run when grub is emerged. Today I realized grub2 has been my only installed version for years and yet I was still booting with legacy grub.
