PostPosted: Thu May 05, 2016 8:17 pm    Post subject: X won't run as root Reply with quote

I updated my machine, and X wouldn't start, so I tried a different user, which worked, and the log files are almost identical for both.

Here is the message displayed when starting X as root:

Code:
startx -- vt8
hostname: Unknown host
xauth:  file /root/.serverauth.6371 does not exist

X.Org X Server 1.17.4
Release Date: 2015-10-28
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0
Build Operating System: Linux 4.0.9-gentoo x86_64 Gentoo
Current Operating System: Linux FX-Gentoo 4.4.6-gentoo #1 SMP Mon Apr 25 22:07:32 CDT 2016 x86_64
Kernel command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-4.4.6-gentoo root=UUID=ea6cac5a-806b-471e-ab15-d3bd7aedc167
Build Date: 12 December 2015  10:39:20AM

Current version of pixman: 0.32.8
   Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org
   to make sure that you have the latest version.
Markers: (--) probed, (**) from config file, (==) default setting,
   (++) from command line, (!!) notice, (II) informational,
   (WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
(==) Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.1.log", Time: Thu May  5 14:58:33 2016
(==) Using config directory: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d"
(==) Using system config directory "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d"
(II) [KMS] Kernel modesetting enabled.
xinit: connection to X server lost

waiting for X server to shut down (II) Server terminated successfully (0). Closing log file.

The only lines i can find that are odd are:

hostname: Unknown host

xauth: file /root/.serverauth.6371 does not exist

xinit: connection to X server lost

But on the working user, both the hostname and serverauth messages come up, and it still works, so at this point only the xinit message seems to matter.

Here is the Xorg.log, it's nearly identical to the working user except the working one doesn't cut off where xinit loses connection

Any ideas what I might have messed up to get in this predicament?

Nobody runs X as root but greenhorns who have no clue what they are doing. Everybody else agrees it is the second most stupid thing one can do. (Most stupid thing is using computer as root.)

Speaking of those, you do know /usr/sbin/Xorg is setuid root by default on Gentoo and nearly every other distro, right?

Yes I happen to know that. My statement is still the same.

If you just want to risk to login as root, you can try to reemerge X and see if this fix the issue.

Yes I run as root, I know the risks and deem them acceptable. If you feel the urge to convince me to not run as root, find the largest, spiniest cactus available, and fornicate with it until the urge passes.

I need to make that my signature on any Linux forum I join.

I tried this, however whatever was broken seems too hard to pin down, so i nuked that install and replaced it with one of my backups, I'll see if it still works after it's been updated.

Though a terminal session/console as root is another matter (so not any use of a computer.)

LMAO.

Still, a really dumb thing to do, running X as root.

Not that I wish to convince you to do otherwise: it's none of my business, and I really don't care what someone else does with their machine/s (unless connected to our network.)

Thanks for the laugh though, on both levels. ;-)

I restored a backup and updated it, the problem came back. It appears the problem was in my .xinitrc, it is identical to the other user, but for *some reason* the newest version of xinit decided to execute my .xinitrc differently than it did previously when running as root.

old .xinitrc that xinit no longer likes:

Code:
#!/bin/sh
# $XConsortium: xinitrc.cpp,v 1.4 91/08/22 11:41:34 rws Exp $

userresources=$HOME/.Xresources
usermodmap=$HOME/.Xmodmap
sysresources=/etc/X11/xinit/.Xresources
sysmodmap=/etc/X11/xinit/.Xmodmap

# merge in defaults and keymaps

if [ -f $sysresources ]; then
    xrdb -merge $sysresources
fi

if [ -f $sysmodmap ]; then
    xmodmap $sysmodmap
fi

if [ -f $userresources ]; then
    xrdb -merge $userresources
fi

if [ -f $usermodmap ]; then
    xmodmap $usermodmap
fi

# Start the window manager:
if [ -z "$DESKTOP_SESSION" -a -x /usr/bin/ck-launch-session ]; then
  exec ck-launch-session mate-session
else
  exec mate-session
fi

new .xinitrc I started using based on the man pages for xinit, and trying xinit without an xinitrc, and then starting MATE through xterm. I based the original (that doesn't work) off of the .xinitrc example

Code:
#!/bin/sh
# $XConsortium: xinitrc.cpp,v 1.4 91/08/22 11:41:34 rws Exp $
mate-session

mate-session executes all my startup applications anyways, so there is no need for anything to be in my .xinitrc except for mate-session

I wish I had tried messing around with xinit in the beginning, would have saved me a lot of trouble.

No problem.

I didn't start off running as root, I simply did so much stuff that required superuser privileges that it became easier to simply run as root all the time It made fixing things so much easier. I have never had a problem caused by running everything as root besides douchbag programmers adding a line of code in their programs that causes it fail to execute properly when run as root. One of these days I'm going to figure out how to disable that little feature so I can root in peace. I have backups that are air-gaped, how much more damage can other people do when they can already access my personal data no matter which user I run as?
