Hi!

For a few days I can see the new stable kernel gentoo-sources-4.4.6 by searching either with

Code:

eix -v gentoo-sources

.......

  IUSE (all versions): build deblob experimental kdbus symlink
     Installed versions:  Version:   4.1.12(4.1.12)^bs
                          Date:      18:02:02 2016-03-20
                          USE:       -build -experimental -kdbus -symlink
                          DEPEND:    sys-apps/sed >=sys-devel/binutils-2.11.90.0.31
                          RDEPEND:   >=sys-libs/ncurses-5.2 sys-devel/make dev-lang/perl sys-devel/bc
                          Version:   4.1.15-r1(4.1.15-r1)^bs
                          Date:      18:12:19 2016-01-23
                          USE:       -build -experimental -kdbus -symlink
                          DEPEND:    sys-apps/sed >=sys-devel/binutils-2.11.90.0.31
                          RDEPEND:   >=sys-libs/ncurses-5.2 sys-devel/make dev-lang/perl sys-devel/bc
     Best versions/slot:  3.10.95(3.10.95)^bs 3.12.52-r1(3.12.52-r1)^bs 3.14.58-r1(3.14.58-r1)^bs 3.18.25-r1(3.18.25-r1)^bs 4.1.12(4.1.12)^bs 4.1.15-r1(4.1.15-r1)^bs 4.4.6(4.4.6)^bs
     Recommendation:      Upgrade

     Description:         Full sources including the Gentoo patchset for the 4.5 kernel tree
     License:             GPL-2 freedist

or by using

Code:

emerge -s gentoo-sources

*  sys-kernel/gentoo-sources

So Portage knows about the new version and eix gives me the recommendation to UPGRADE. But when I try to do so, nothing happens:

Code:

emerge -uDNvp @world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies              ... done!

Total: 0 packages, Size of downloads: 0 KiB

Trying to update just the kernel:

Code:

emerge -1va gentoo-sources
This action requires superuser access...
Would you like to add --pretend to options? [Yes/No] y

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies                                  ... done!

Total: 0 packages, Size of downloads: 0 KiB

Even when I try to emerge with detailed information nothing happens:
Code:

sudo emerge -1va =sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-4.4.6

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies                                   ... done!

Total: 0 packages, Size of downloads: 0 KiB

Nothing to merge; quitting.

As far as I can see I have no restrictions in package.mask or similar.[/code]
I have seen this behavior for some other small packages a view times in the last ten years and these problems disappeared just by waiting a view weeks, but never with a system-package oder something in the Gentoo-world-file. Any advice to solve this problem for me?. Thank you very much for your help.

Are you sure? if you put gentoo-sources in package.provided, you'll get that, portage will not handle them for you anymore.

What happens when you run
Code:
emerge -pC gentoo-sources
emerge -p --ignore-default-opts gentoo-sources:4.4.6

@Genone
@krinn

Thank you so much for your answers. I have no package.provided under /etc/portage/.

Here is the output of your suggestions.

Code:

sudo emerge -pC gentoo-sources
Passwort:
 * This action can remove important packages! In order to be safer, use
 * `emerge -pv --depclean <atom>` to check for reverse dependencies before
 * removing packages.

>>> These are the packages that would be unmerged:

 sys-kernel/gentoo-sources
    selected: 4.1.12 4.1.15-r1
   protected: none
     omitted: none

All selected packages: =sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-4.1.12 =sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-4.1.15-r1

>>> 'Selected' packages are slated for removal.
>>> 'Protected' and 'omitted' packages will not be removed.

christian@chr-gentoo ~ $ sudo emerge -p --ignore-default-opts gentoo-sources:4.4.6

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies                  ... done!
[ebuild  NS    ] sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-4.4.6 [4.1.12, 4.1.15-r1] USE="-build -experimental -kdbus -symlink"

Obviously your second command will do the trick but I can not understand why this happened. For some reasons I try to have older gentoo-sources as backup and testing.

Christian

PS: I have noticed that I am a member since 17.08.2002. WOW. Thank you all for these fantastic Gentoo-years and the Gentoo-spirit !

Is there a difference in output between the following commands?
Code:
emerge -p --ignore-default-opts gentoo-sources:4.4.6
emerge -p gentoo-sources:4.4.6

emerge -p --ignore-default-opts =gentoo-sources-4.4.6
emerge -p =gentoo-sources-4.4.6

Originally I suspected that you might have --noreplace in EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, but as you don't have 4.4.6 installed you should still see the upgrade anyway. So now I'm wondering if my command showed the update due to the ignore option or because it used the slot operator.

Hi Genone,

sorry for the delay in answering your question.

Code:

christian@chr-gentoo ~ $ emerge -p --ignore-default-opts gentoo-sources:4.4.6

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies                   ... done!

[ebuild  NS    ] sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-4.4.6 [4.1.12, 4.1.15-r1] USE="-build -experimental -kdbus -symlink"

christian@chr-gentoo ~ $ emerge -p gentoo-sources:4.4.6

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies    ... done!

christian@chr-gentoo ~ $ emerge -p --ignore-default-opts =gentoo-sources-4.4.6

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies                 ... done!
[ebuild  NS    ] sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-4.4.6 [4.1.12, 4.1.15-r1] USE="-build -experimental -kdbus -symlink"

christian@chr-gentoo ~ $ emerge -p =gentoo-sources-4.4.6

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies                                ... done!

So I think the --ignore-default-opts helps to resolve the problem for now, but I did not change the default options of portage: My portage.mask is empty und I do not have a portage.provided.

package.mask / package.provided are irrelevant, what matters here is what you set for EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS. Please provide the output of `emerge --info` as requested.
