Hello Gentoo community
I've migrated from {another distro} because of {an init system} and am really enjoying it. The documentation is first rate and the OS feels solid and consistent, so well done.
But I have a quick question,
I've gone in at the deep end, making myself problems to fix in the spirit of learning, and have installed a hardened 64 bit kernel. I've then switched profiles to install KDE5 - which works a treat.
What's the deal with switching profiles to and fro? For example, should I switch back to the hardened profile to please my initial stage and kernel setup, or do I let the desktop profile dominate now that I've opted for Plasma?

| Profile is generally just a preset to make life easier. You could use plain default and build whatever you want on it. I would probably leave it on hardened and add USE flags for X and KDE. |

As Buffoon said, there is nothing magic about a profile. It just makes your life easier. Specifically, all a profile does is set the USE="" variable and they get overwritten with each sync so there is no need or point in messing with them. There is no reason you can't run KDE on a hardened profile or a hardened system on a KDE profile. You just have to choose the appropriate flag(s) in your make.conf file, which overrides the profile use flags anyway.

You can see the effect of profile switching without emerging anything.
Run This shows you lots of useful info about your system including your eventual global USE flags.
Your per package USE flags are applied to this baseline.
Switch profiles and run again. Compare the USE settings.
Rinse and repeat as many times as you like.
Be sure to select the original profile when you are done.
Audition ufed ... its a USE flag editor. There are others.

Yeah your answers confirm what I had read elsewhere, i.e. set a profile and alter use flags 'on top of' that. But I couldn't get KDE5 to emerge without switching profile (purely on account of my inexperience).
So my next question was going to be how to determine the USE flags in each profile so I can chop and change as required, but NeddySeagoon seems to have taken care of that for me!
I'll install the laptop again, there's some other stuff I want to play with anyway (like ZFS root), and have another run so I understand it better.
