I would be grateful for help to solve what appears to be a PAM and/or KWallet 5 problem:

PREAMBLE
My Clevo W230SS laptop has Optimus hardware with Gentoo Stable installed, using ConsoleKit, OpenRC and KDE Plasma 5. The installation normally uses nvidia-drivers, although I can switch easily to the Intel video driver. The Desktop Manager is LightDM. Until I updated world a couple of days ago, everything was working nicely. Below is what the world update consisted of (plus I had to re-merge cargo and rust and firefox-60.0 in order to get firefox-60.0 to install):

THE PROBLEM
After updating world a couple of days ago, I could could no longer log in to Plasma 5; there was no LightDM GTK Greeter screen, just a black screen with a (moveable) mouse cursor. First I tried re-merging some packages that I thought might have a bearing on the problem:

Code:
Wed May 16 14:34:02 2018 >>> media-sound/pulseaudio-11.1
Wed May 16 14:53:27 2018 >>> x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-390.42

Wed May 16 16:16:37 2018 >>> www-client/firefox-60.0
Wed May 16 16:17:28 2018 >>> app-emulation/virtualbox-modules-5.1.36
Wed May 16 16:26:17 2018 >>> media-libs/mesa-17.3.9
Wed May 16 16:26:32 2018 >>> x11-apps/mesa-progs-8.3.0
Wed May 16 16:27:55 2018 >>> x11-base/xorg-server-1.19.5-r2
Wed May 16 16:29:30 2018 >>> x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-390.42
Wed May 16 16:29:36 2018 >>> x11-base/xorg-drivers-1.19
Wed May 16 16:30:50 2018 >>> x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.99.917_p20180214

Wed May 16 17:13:11 2018 >>> virtual/pam-0-r1

But that made no difference. I then decided to see if the Intel video driver would work instead of the NVIDIA driver, so I logged in to TTY1 and manually switched from nvidia-drivers to the Intel driver and was then able to log in to Plasma 5, although there is no authorisation to NetworkManager so the laptop could not connect to the Internet, and /var/log/messages now displays pam-kwallet5 error messages, as shown below.

Before the problem started, this is what /var/log/messages had:

Code:
May 13 14:10:44 clevow230ss lightdm[3980]: pam_kwallet5(lightdm:auth): (null): pam_sm_authenticate
May 13 14:10:44 clevow230ss lightdm[3980]: pam_kwallet5(lightdm:setcred): pam_kwallet5: pam_sm_setcred
May 13 14:10:44 clevow230ss lightdm[3980]: pam_kwallet5(lightdm:session): pam_kwallet5: pam_sm_open_session
May 13 14:10:44 clevow230ss lightdm[3980]: pam_kwallet5(lightdm:session): pam_kwallet5: final socket path: /tmp/kwallet5_fitzcarraldo.socket
May 13 14:27:04 clevow230ss lightdm[3980]: pam_kwallet5(lightdm:session): pam_kwallet5: pam_sm_close_session
May 13 14:27:04 clevow230ss lightdm[3980]: pam_kwallet5(lightdm:setcred): pam_kwallet5: pam_sm_setcred

Now, this is what /var/log/messages has:

Code:
May 18 13:22:03 clevow230ss lightdm[3980]: pam_kwallet5(lightdm:auth): (null): pam_sm_authenticate
May 18 13:22:03 clevow230ss lightdm[3980]: pam_kwallet5(lightdm:setcred): pam_kwallet5: pam_sm_setcred

When using plasma-nm from the KDE Plasma 5 Panel, the following message occurs in /var/log/messages:

Code:
May 17 17:12:09 clevow230ss NetworkManager[3435]: <info>  [1526573529.2771] audit: op="connection-activate" uuid="50514acf-b435-4289-c187-9a382944e7d2" name="GRAND MERCURE" pid=4173 uid=1000 result="fail" reason="Not authorized to control networking."

I can get NetworkManager to connect to the network if I open a Konsole window and run nmtui as root user, so I can still access the Internet.

I then found a work-around that enables me to get what appears to be a fully functioning Plasma 5 Desktop, by using the following procedure despite the pam_kwallet5 error messages:

1. I boot the laptop (using the Intel video driver rather than the NVIDIA closed-source driver).

2. I login to Plasma 5. The above-mentioned pam_kwallet5 error messages are then logged in /var/log/messages. Although the Plasma 5 Desktop is displayed, I cannot use Plasma-nm, audio, LibreOffice, etc.

3. I select 'Application Launcher' > 'Leave' > 'Logout (End Session)'.

The LightDM Greeter's wallpaper is then briefly displayed (no panel or login window), followed quickly by the black and white Plasma 5 login screen (KDE logo and rotating circle) and then by the Plasma 5 Desktop itself, which works correctly. Plasma-nm, audio, LibreOffice etc. work normally.

I have also done the following, which ran through to completion without any error messages but made no difference:

Code:
# emerge --sync
# emerge -ev kde-plasma/plasma-meta
# emerge @module-rebuild @x11-module-rebuild
# emerge @preserved-rebuild

OK, the problem has been fixed, but I'm not sure precisely what fixed it and what was the cause.

Anyway, since my previous post I did the following:

1. Re-merged AccountsService, but that made no difference.

Code:
Sat May 19 12:12:19 2018 >>> sys-apps/accountsservice-0.6.45

2. Re-synced the Portage tree and updated world again, but that made no difference either.

Code:
Sat May 19 14:54:43 2018 >>> virtual/editor-0-r1
Sat May 19 14:54:49 2018 >>> media-libs/freetype-2.8
Sat May 19 14:55:04 2018 >>> x11-plugins/enigmail-2.0.4
Sat May 19 14:55:42 2018 >>> net-misc/freerdp-2.0.0_rc2-r1

3. Unmasked by keyword LightDM Version 1.26.0-r1 and installed it, but LightDM would not even start and TTY1 was displayed instead.

Code:
Sat May 19 14:55:47 2018 >>> x11-misc/lightdm-1.26.0-r1

4. Reverted to LightDM Version 1.18.3-r1, and this time the LightDM Greeter wallpaper was displayed but an X11 window popped up on it with the message: 'Could not start kdeinit5. Check your installation.'

Code:
Sat May 19 15:13:52 2018 >>> x11-misc/lightdm-1.18.3-r1

5. Searched the Web for the error message regarding kdeinit5 and one of the causes was stated to be FreeType. So I re-synced the Portage tree and found a new version (2.9.1-r3) of FreeType is available in the tree, so I merged that.

Code:
Sat May 19 15:54:36 2018 >>> media-libs/freetype-2.9.1-r3

6. I could then boot successfully to a Plasma 5 Desktop when the Intel video driver was selected, and the installation appears to be working normally again, i.e. no pam_kwallet5 error messages. I then switched back to the NVIDIA driver and the laptop also boots successfully to a Plasma 5 Desktop that appears to be working normally, i.e. no pam_kwallet5 error messages any more. So, whatever it was, it seems to have been cured.
