After giving up on Plasma 5 last week, the news came out that Plasma 5 is stable, so I decided to give the upgrade another try. More success this time, but I'm having a lot of problems with kwin crashing and killing my session. (Well, it doesn't kill it, but I lose the ability to move windows around and actually do work.) I upgraded using the simple rules in the news announcement: setting a new profile, emerge -uND world, and then emerge plasma-meta. There were some blockers and use changes that I had to make too.

There seems like there might be some repeatability with the kwin crashes. It seems to happen either after the screen locks and I unlock it or when the screen goes into power save mode. However, I can't find anything in my logs that points to trouble.

So, has anyone seen this problem? Any ideas of what I should be looking for in the logs?

Random details that may or may not matter: The machine is a 6-core Xeon with a Nvidia Quadro K2200 video card running a 4K monitor. I'm using nvidia-drivers-361.28, which is the newest stable release on gentoo. I'm using lightDM because I thought the problem might have been associated with sddm. I THINK it happens with either one though.

My emerge --info

I guess you can't display images in the forums.

One more thing I've figured out, it seems to have something to do with sleeping the display. I can lock the screen and then get back in to my session, but if the screen locks and the power settings shut down the screen, then things crash.

I can at least somewhat recover use of the computer by doing a "kwin_x11 --replace".

And after the last crash, I found this in the message
Code:

This is a pretty nasty bug or set of bugs which has been around for a year at least. Just Google "error 4 in libQt5Sql.so" to see what I mean.

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=355878

puts the blame on a qt bug: https://bugreports.qt.io/browse/QTBUG-31389

It's a pretty complex bug(s) though and a strange one. I myself had similar entries and for me masking xproto-7.0.28 solved it then:
https://forums-web2.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-7865168.html

I doubt the above is still relevant though but might be worth a shot.

I'll try downgrading xproto and see if that helps.

I'm almost all the way through an emerge -e world, just to see if that makes things play nicely together.

I did an experiment last night and turned of all the power controls to the monitor. When I got back in this morning, everything was perfectly fine (although the screen was still blazing brightly). Then I tried turning off the monitor to see if it was possible to just do power saving manually. Pow, down goes plasma.

This seems like a pretty serious bug though, why have the Qt folks not fixed it yet?

Downgrading xproto does not fix the problem unfortunately. Fixing it is as easy as "kwin_x11 --replace", but that only works if it didn't crash at the lock screen.

Are there any other solutions at the moment other than A) going back to KDE 4 or B) never turning off my monitor?

A month of fiddling and I have something that mostly works...

I ended up upgrading to Qt 5.6, Plasma 5.6, and KDE Frameworks 5.21 and now have a system that works, even if the screen sleep doesn't really consistently work. At least the whole system doesn't go down when the screen blanks.
