PostPosted: Thu Mar 17, 2016 8:17 am    Post subject: [SOLVED] emerge firefox error Reply with quote

After "emerge --update --deep --with-bdeps=y --newuse @world" command, i have this problem:

at KDE reboot, if i launch Firefox or any other browser, i can navigate for about 30 seconds, after which i hear a beep and internet doesn't navigate more.
Rss news feed also, doesn't appears since from reboot.
And I don't have the icon to turn off the PC (before emerge world this was) but only end session icon.

perhaps a demon not start?

or some package to be reemerged?

With konqueror internet run fine. In my opinion firefox must be reemerge.

Then i have reemerged firefox, and package is [ebuild U]

During emerging i have this error:

I think this also.
Now i'm triyng to emerge firefox out of Kde (from command line).
I had already emerged firefox like this, putting in fstab file a tmpfs line with 2 GB, and firefox emerged fine but it doesn't work.
And if i reemerged it was [ebuild U]... strange.

Let's see if now installing will be ok.

From command line no error and firefox emerged fine... but it doesn't work!!!
If i reemerged it this is [ebuild R], then i think it is installed completely.

Now i think to unmerge firefox 38.7.0 and mask this version, then install a precedent version.

The key parts of why the compiled failed is this...
Quote:
collect2: error: ld terminated with signal 9 [Killed]

Most times when you see this in a compile, it's because of insufficient memory, and the kernel killed the process.

Quote:
KiB Mem: 2067144 total, 1070364 free
KiB Swap: 524284 total, 280544 free

This shows us, you have about 2GB of ram, and only 512MB of swap, while trying to run KDE (which is where 1GB is fully used by it's self).

Quote:
MAKEOPTS="-j2"

Then you have this, saying to have 2 make jobs at once, using even more memory (when you barely have any to begin with).

Considering it's well known that KDE/Gnome both will use 1GB by them selves, and Firefox and Chrome running will also eat over 1GB. That's saying that you are asking for punishment to run almost completely on swap...

What you should do, is first get rid of the MAKEOPTS completely, as you don't have much of any memory to try having multiple make jobs at once.
Second, you should increase your swap to about 2GB, the reason for this is that most systems need about 4GB to run a modern GUI reliably... (that including having a browser open and other programs).

The strange thing is that before emerge world, firefox run well... emerge world updated firefox to last version (38.7) and from here firefox don't run.

Inside KDE environment i have emake failed error, but out of KDE i don't have any error. As you say, if KDE not working i have more memory.

Maybe old version of Firefox occupies less memory?

I unmerged firefox, then mask 38.7.0 version.
Emerging firefox, it installed me 38.6.1 version and out of Kde it installed me correctly (without error).

Now i have Firefox 38.6.1 (my first version, when it worked correctly)... but, i don't know why, it doesn't work.
It navigates for 3 links (3 connections) and after it doesn't navigate more.
If i search fourth link it is in "connecting" status and It remains so for a long time without connecting.
I looked settings also, but it's ok.

So, for now, i emerged Vivaldi browser and it run very well.

But is there anyone who can tell me why Firefox don't work (first it worked fine)?

Try https://packages.gentoo.org/packages/www-client/firefox-bin

Or raising swap.
