I'm seeing some unusual stuttering when using X on my system. Everything works except for the intermittent lag that shows up every few seconds with every UI element. My cursor lags, scrolling in the file manager or browser lags, moving windows on the desktop lags, video playback lags regardless of resolution, 3D screensavers lag, and even glxgears (not a benchmark, I know) lags. glxgears arguably shows off the problem best because the GALLIUM_HUD FPS overlay shows the framerate drop every few seconds at the same time the animation skips.

See this image: http://imgur.com/Z7kbmN7

I'm running an AMD Radeon R7 250 on a dual-processor workstation with a ton of RAM, so I doubt it's a hardware issue. I don't experience any graphics lag when running other operating systems on the same machine. Moreover, I have another, less-powerful system with a nearly identical GPU (R7 240, also Oland) and an almost identical configuration (most recent stable kernel + Xorg + radeonsi drivers + Xfce) that exhibits none of these issues, not even the glxgears one.

Apologies for my vague explanation, but I haven't been able to narrow this down any further. I'm happy to provide additional details.

haven't seen anything suspicious in your logs.
only thing I would suggest is to try newer mesa version
Code:
# glxinfo | grep Open
OpenGL vendor string: X.Org
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on AMD CAPE VERDE (DRM 2.43.0, LLVM 3.7.0)
OpenGL core profile version string: 4.1 (Core Profile) Mesa 11.1.0
OpenGL core profile shading language version string: 4.10
OpenGL core profile context flags: (none)
OpenGL core profile profile mask: core profile
OpenGL core profile extensions:
OpenGL version string: 3.0 Mesa 11.1.0
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.30

Upgrading mesa to the most recent testing version (11.1.2-r1) had no effect. I had also tried upgrading xf86-video-ati last week, but that didn't do anything either.

wonder if it depends on kernel version.
did you try some older (eg 3.18.x) or
newer (4.4.x) kernel already?

edit:
since I don't have any experience playing with Xeon based systems
maybe someone else on the forum can come up with more enlightened
ideas?

edit2:
radeon firmware up to date? sys-kernel/linux-firmware-20151207

another point came to mind:
is your other system (the one carrying the 240) also a NUMA machine?
havent played with NUMA machines for quiet a while and I am not
up-to-date regarding NUMA and RCU configuration in the current kernels.
wonder if strange lag is due to some kernel setup for NUMA machines.

Both linux-firmware and radeon-ucode are up to date. I haven't yet tried any newer kernels, but I have been playing around with the configuration. NUMA, it turns out, was already enabled. That it's a kernel issue seems likely considering I've run Mint and Fedora LiveUSBs on the same system and had no graphical issues; those were likely to have many more options enabled or slightly newer (or older) kernels.

The system with the R7 240 is a uniprocessor system with a Xeon X3363. The more I think about it, the more the dual-CPU architecture seems like the culprit.

Edit: does this topic need to be moved? I have no indication that the problem is with X itself; the lag appears to just be a symptom of the real problem.

Kernel upgrade did the trick. Went from 4.1.15-r1 to 4.4.4 and everything's buttery smooth now.
