[SOLVED] Energing Glibc-2.21-r2 freezes system

Hello Forum,

if I emerge Glibc in version 2.21-r2 my PC keeps freezing after that. Installing Glibc works fine but if I run emerge again afterwards for any package it freezes instantly. Normal working could be good for some time but even than the machine freezes. Sometimes if the machine is frozen the ATX-power button doesn't even work and I have to pull the Plug to recover. Most times the ATX-button can be used and some times even the reset button is enough.
At this moment I have masked Glibc to version 2.21-r1 and everything runs fine.

Usually strange behavior like this is due to hardware: motherboard or power supply marginalities. Try another motherboard or power supply to see if things are any better.

But the System works good without the Glibc-Update. Additionally I am playing games (with windows) a lot on the same hardware which runs fine too. If it really is a fault of the hardware it must be a feature which is not used in GLibc-2.21-r1 or windows 7 at all!? I can not believe that.
By the way: I upgraded the power supply a few days ago before posting in the forum. :-)

It doesn't help. A change of the mainboard is not really a quick task, so I'm trying not to do that as first action.

Yes this software thing happens all the time having hardware that's dependent on software. The only other thing if you really believe it's software is to run remote serial console and see if you get an oops or if network continues to work when the GUI hangs? Is it dead in the console too?

You may try working around it by mucking with CFLAGS for glibc, though that probably has other drawbacks.

The kernel is NOT supposed to hang due to userland software like a bad glibc and especially not affect the reset switch, that there is indicative of a bad (~ly designed) motherboard... And possibly a bad CPU.

Okay, I understand. I'm gonna try this serial console debug. But I have to figure how to do this first. This can take a bit of time. I'm comming back with a log or something.
I remember seeing something (Oops? or other error message, I's been a few weeks) which includes "machine-check" one day when I was trying to emerge some software without X running
Also I tried to use Eclipse yesterday (without emerging, just unzipped it) and the PC freezes too after a few minutes) But I can play Minecraft for hours which also runs Java. Strange behaviour.

If you got a machine check, it could be a bad processor too.

This is clearly a hardware issue.

it could also be bad RAM.

Faulty power supply, bulging capacitors, heat, etc. These things can often be exposed when a system is put under a lot of stress, like when compiling a rather large package, even if it's fine otherwise. It definitely seems like a hardware issue.

Hello back again :-)

* I ran Memcheck over night which shows no errors. Also I tried the single RAM modules each of its own, and booted and crashed.
* Harddisk and SSD was also changed and only the Gentoo installation was cloned (with working glibc - than made the update) to the changed device
* Power Supply is totally new and with more power than the last one.
* I can't surely remember if I cross checked the video card but as I have sold my old one now there is no easy way to do it (again).
* So only Software, CPU and mainboard are left as source of the errors. (CPU and mainboard are the most expensive hardware parts left to change so I need to be really desperate to do it :-(

Maybe I should try a BIOS update first...!?

This log is logged from the serial console during a crash from eclipse(!) which freezes the whole system.
Looks like some ACPI/power-management-anything to me. But only from going through the printed lines not from real knowledge.
Maybe later I'll try a Libc-after-update-crash log to. But it takes some effort to regenerate my system.
maybe anyone can give a real hint.

EDIT: looks like at least eclipse is running now (after a bios update). I am surprised and happy :-)

I'll report again after an glibc update as soon as I can effort the time.

Yes the firmware update could help by programming the CPU more conservatively or correctly especially if your CPU model is later than the firmware.
Hope that's it and it's completely solved now.

looks like that's it. I updated GLibc and had no crashes since then. The Firmware seams to have been bad.
