Using xfce4, when I open a terminal it has the message

Would you like to add --pretend to options? [Yes/No]
This happens with either an xfce4 terminal or an xterm. It's not a big deal, but since I work with a lot of terminal windows, I'd like to get rid of this. If I respond with as Y, then it starts this process

There seems to be an implied yes if switching to root. I'd love to know where this message is coming from an how to kill it. Thanks,

Seems like someone stuck in emerge --depclean somewhere in your login scripts...did your machine get compromised or perhaps you added something when you were inebriated or sleepy?

Check your ~/.bashrc, ~/.bash_login ~/.profile and perhaps /etc/profile.d for extraneous files or commands... probably have to hunt through each manually. Do you remember when it started?

Thanks for the thought. The only files in /etc, that looked like possible culprit was /etc/bash/bashrc, where I had some aliases defined that had emerge in them. Commenting out those aliases, and things worked as they should. A closer look revealed the problem.

So your aliases are just not well defined. Did you protect the commands with simple quotes ?

Code:
alias ll='ls -al'

The emerge commands are (normally) only root commands. You should place the related aliases in ~root/.bashrc.

Yes quotes were used, but something was added after the quotes that caused the problem. As a famous philosopher said, "stupid is as stupid does"!
