vixie-cron: stops working after update

Hi all,
on my server i have vixie-cron running. As an example, it syncs the portage tree and creates the tags on my portage repository. If i run an update to the system, i can see in the portage repo history and on the backups, that it doesnt run any jobs. I stoped and restarted vixie cron, but it doesnt help. I always need to reboot the whole server after any update.

Any suggestions where to dig?

Do you use systemd or openrc ?
Do you have some logs (in /var/log/cron*, usually) to show ?

I use openrc. In the cron logs i cant find any errors. That is the strange thing.
