Well, the old classic xawtv is last rited
https://packages.gentoo.org/packages/media-tv/xawtv

Anyone have any suggestions for an alternative - to simply flip through all the options on a capture card/tuner combo to test? No recording needed, just like to see what's on the inputs...

Yeah, I've been resorting to mplayer at the moment but it's fairly clunky at switching inputs to experiment with the capture cards...
Tried using vlc as well and it's even worse... mplayer is better oddly enough :D Though xawtv when I last used it was best...

I prefer mpv for watching, v4l-utils for tweaking. The latter has a GUI that works fairly well.

I guess what I'd like is to tweak the controls and get instant feedback whether or not the controls had the effect that I hoped it would control. I was using v4l-ctl as well but found something really annoying: had to quit out of mplayer to change the controls as they fought over the device handle...

What's the GUI command in v4l-utils, does it also interactively show the capture so we can figure out what options we need to pass to mencoder command line?
