How to install Eclipse?

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

To be perfectly honest with you, the gentoo packaging for eclipse is just terrible. This derives from the fact that it is so hard to properly support. As far as I know all the ebuilds are hopelessly out of date.

If you want it for your own personal use I recommend simply downloading it directly into your home directory and running it from there. It won't be available to all users but you will have it and it will work.

What you should not do is try to manually do a global install. That will break things.
First things first, but not necessarily in that order.

Apologies if I take a while to respond. I'm currently working on the dematerialization circuit for my blue box.

You may also take a look at the Eclipse overlay https://github.com/gentoo/eclipse-overlay. It has some more up-to-date versions of Eclipse.
