Hi all,

I've just performed a fresh Gentoo install on a Virtual Machine, using KDE + KDM.
Unfortunately, I am not able to login using my credentials whenever the KDM login form appears. The command line authentication works.

I have noticed that /var/log/auth.log contains this:
Code:
Jan 24 13:56:49 GentooVBox kdm: :0[2139]: pam_unix(kde:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=:0 ruser= rhost=  user=fbcyborg

Strangely, my host system (Gentoo Linux also) doesn't have such a file. I don't understand if this could depend on the installation profile. I can see nothing strange within the pam configuration file.

What could be the problem? Is there any other log file to check?

emerge --info?
Which profile did you choose?
What version of KDE did you emerge?

Which (meta?) package did you use to install KDE?

Please check:
Code:
$ ls -l /etc/pam.d/kde*
$ equery l -i kdebase-pam kcheckpass

Any other flags you possibly set in /etc/portage/package.use?

I emerged KDE using kdebase-meta.

Code:

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 217 Jan 23 12:45 /etc/pam.d/kde-np

Code:
# equery l -i kdebase-pam kcheckpass
 * Searching for kdebase-pam ...
[IP-] [  ] kde-base/kdebase-pam-9:0

 * Searching for kcheckpass ...
[IP-] [  ] kde-base/kcheckpass-4.11.19:4/4.11

I'm a bit at a loss there, have you followed the guide and configured the services?

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/KDE#Services

What happens if you try with e.g. startx or lightdm-gtk?

Yes,

I've followed the guide and double checked again.
About services:

Quote:
D-bus

OK, up and running (default runlevel)
Quote:
polkit

I don't find any /etc/init.d/polkit file neither in the guest OS nor in the host.
Quote:
udev

Up and running
Quote:
udisks

I don't see any /etc/init.d/udisks file (same in the host system)

startx as an user gives me this: http://imgur.com/dVEa5gb
No lightdm-gtk installed.
$DISPLAY is not set or cannot connect to the X server.

If I try startkde now I get:

One strange thing i see during the boot:
/dev/xconsole: no such file or directory

Hi,

I've followed again what is told here and here.
I really do not understand why this is still happening. The only strange thing I can see is the difference between the host and the guest operating systems: /var/log directory contains the auth.log file in the faulty system. Such file is not present on my host fully working operating Gentoo Linux System.

Who is the owner of such file? Who writes into it?
