I am a Gentoo virgin no more!
Today, for the first time, I booted into my Gentoo installation.
I am still using a legacy, out of date Kubuntu installation which I plan to migrate to Gentoo, once everything is properly configured and that I have migrated all data and configuration to the new system.
I have been using toying with Gentoo for about a year, but only ever using it in a chroot environment. I procrastinated configuring and installing the Linux Kernel and updating Grub. I mostly was busy with other things.
But yesterday, I pored over kernel configuration documentation, and after a few misses, I finally was able to actually reboot my computer and boot into a working Gentoo installation.
There is still a lot of things to configure. I still have much planning to do to migrate my working environment and my data to the new system, before I can use Gentoo for my daily working activities and, at long last, ditch the old distribution.
But today, I am happy. It may sound ridiculous to you, but I feel that I have made a little, but significant step forward.
I may not be a Gentoo virgin anymore, but I am not a Gentoo dandy, yet! |

augustin,
That's the hard bit done. Well done.
It gets easier going forward as when you change something and your install no longer works, you can change it back and have anther go. _________________ Regards,

Thank you Randy, Zucca and Neddy.
It's a small step, but for me an important one.
I am eager to be using Gentoo full time! |

I was lucky in the sense that Gentoo was my first Linux distro I used daily on my main PC (laptop).
Before Gentoo I briefly tried mkLinux, but I never got networking to work (repeat after me: networking working). But right after I bought the laptop my friend told me that I should install Gentoo on it, since using Gentoo would teach me a lot on Linux world. He was right about that. _________________ ..: Zucca :..

Funny thing about losing your virginity makes you want to keep losing it again and again. |

I haven't tested networking yet... Today, I'll configure the nvidia driver (I may have to recompile the kernel), and the Server.
I don't mind learning about Linux and everything that makes my computer tick. I'm rather interested. What I mind, though, it's the time I cannot spend doing more productive things and more important to me. |

Haha!
Let's have a virtual Gentoo party, and see what we can do together about that! |

Thank you again.
Actually, community spirit is one of the main reasons why I much prefer Linux over other OS.
I like the idea of sharing resources, helping each other out, and each contributing a little something to the community, according to their own abilities and expertise.
My dream is to create a community where it's made clear that newbies have as much to contribute as veterans, although in different ways. |

@augustin: Welcome to Gentoo! Booting the system for the first time is probably the most difficult part of Gentoo installation; I'm glad you managed to do that! |

buongiorno fturco, and thanks!
Yes.
I'm sure many here wonder: what's so difficult about compiling a kernel and rebooting the computer?
But for a newbie, it can be a bit stressful... I'm glad it's over. |

On a completely new system I have started using genkernel, check the system boots and then manually configure a kernel after that. It saves a chroot from a live cd and ensures the system will boot before doing a manual kernel config. You can get a good idea from a live cd what kernel modules are needed ... but things like graphics and ATI binary blobs can still be a bit more tricky - so knowing it's only graphics helps |
