Don't despair, it is always hard to get these things going for the very first time. ;)

This is also covered by the Xorg guide: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Xorg/Guide#make.conf_configuration

Most likely adding synaptics to INPUT_DEVICES will pull in the driver you need.

You did rebuild xorg-drivers this time, did you? ;)

The drivers provided by your laptop vendor might reveal the specific make of touchpad, otherwise you could utilise your favourite search engine to find out which one your laptop is using. Most likely someone else has tried to put linux on it. ;)

Just installed KDE4 on a fresh Gentoo install. I had issues with the mouse but not the keyboard. I made the following changes:

Code:
/etc/portage/make.conf
INPUT_DEVICES="evdev synaptics mouse"

then I ran:
Code:
emerge xorg-drivers

Also, you need to make sure you the event interface turned on in the kernel, and make sure anything that looks like the right mouse driver is on as well. Then rebuild and install the kernel, and if you want X to start on boot:
Code:
rc-update add xdm default

nano /etc/conf.d/xdm

and change the DISPLAYMANAGER line (For kdm like this):
Code:
DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm"

That's a nutshell version of what I did.

If everything else is in good working order, your next reboot should land you at a graphical login screen. If not, check the wiki on Xorg Server configuration.

I'm now upgrading to KDE5... found the biggest problems were the blockers (I simply unmerged any offending packages) and the GCC version- I had to jump through hoops to install 4.8.5 when 5.3.0 was already on the system. How has the rest of your install gone?

If you re-emerge packages for use flag changes, you should ouse -1 (--oneshot) in the future - dependencies should not end up in your world file, but packages you consciously chose to install. ;)

I always thought oneshot was just about merging without dependencies- never used it much and never thought about the impact on the world file- would have sure made a difference in some of my updates though!

Merging without dependencies is done with --nodeps instead ;)

I'm trying to emerge kdelibs4support (automatically initiated by the command emerge --ask plasma-meta) and it keeps failing. I've tried getting rid of -pipe in my CFLAGS and I've tried using MAKEOPTS="-j1", but it still fails. I'm not seeing anything in the build log that helps- it just fails at 98%. I've been running for the past couple of days without a reboot (Not normally a problem for Linux, but between environment variable changes and emerging unstable software, all bets are off!)

Here's my emerge --info:
Code:

...and I think I have an idea where to start but not how.... The last 10% of the build logfile is located at this pastebin:
http://pastebin.com/bv3EF9uP

and there is an error about an undefined interface.... it's in the networkstatus portion- is this a network interface, and if so how do I find and remove it? What other ways can I resolve this error?

It looks like the errors start a little earlier in the file. So it's a function interface problem. Revdep-rebuild comes up clean. I'm a little hesitant to do emerge preserved-rebuild quite yet because of the number of packages I had to unmerge to get to this point. Should that be my next step? or is there some clue I missed when I read the build log?

Thanks!

You need to update dev-qt/designer to same version as your other Qt packages.

I googled this and never saw the bug report- but that was before I saw the "interface" message. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction- designer did need the update and is running now.
