Hello,
i just ran into some strange problems with plasma-5.5 on nvidia-driver (no desktop rendering, no wallpaper, disabled desktop-effects). Additionally, eglgears were not displaying anything in render window (and no errors in console). After some digging, i found the propable issue: packages use mesa's EGL library instead of nvidia's :

Code:
#pwd
/usr/lib64

Code:
# ls -l libEGL*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root     15 12-17 20:19 libEGL.so -> libEGL.so.1.0.0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root     15 12-17 20:19 libEGL.so.1 -> libEGL.so.1.0.0
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 185800 12-17 20:19 libEGL.so.1.0.0

Code:
# equery f nvidia-drivers | grep EGL
/usr/lib32/opengl/nvidia/lib/libEGL.so
/usr/lib32/opengl/nvidia/lib/libEGL.so.1
/usr/lib32/opengl/nvidia/lib/libEGL_nvidia.so
/usr/lib32/opengl/nvidia/lib/libEGL_nvidia.so.0
/usr/lib32/opengl/nvidia/lib/libEGL_nvidia.so.1
/usr/lib64/opengl/nvidia/lib/libEGL.so
/usr/lib64/opengl/nvidia/lib/libEGL.so.1
/usr/lib64/opengl/nvidia/lib/libEGL_nvidia.so
/usr/lib64/opengl/nvidia/lib/libEGL_nvidia.so.0
/usr/lib64/opengl/nvidia/lib/libEGL_nvidia.so.1

Code:
# equery f mesa | grep EGL | grep lib
/usr/lib32/libEGL.so
/usr/lib32/libEGL.so.1
/usr/lib32/libEGL.so.1.0.0
/usr/lib64/libEGL.so
/usr/lib64/libEGL.so.1
/usr/lib64/libEGL.so.1.0.0

I'm recompiling qt and plasma with -egl and - :?: gles2 while writing this post (to get xrender engine in kde systemsettings) but shouldn't there be a eselect option to set EGL implementation (similar to opengl) ?

I just ran into the exact same issue. I re-enabled egl and gles2 after some new blocker came up that was being a pita and I read it was the way kde5 was going so...

Now I have SDDM loading up and after I enter my password it just hangs there. I can see kde loaded in the background by right clicking and the kde desktop menu comes up, I can start konsole under "run command" and clicking around I can hit stuff I put on my desktop. Choosing "Desktop settings" beings up nothing, an empty window that hangs there. I can click on the kde launcher (in the lower left) and it draws everything wrong.

This is on an optimus laptop so I gave booting the intel route a try and it worked fine. I could post a ton of info but ultimately the change that broke it was re-renabling egl/gles2. I'm at a bit of a loss what the actual fix would be...
